Conan O’Brien Honors Martin Short After His Daughter’s Tragic Passing

Conan O’Brien closed out the 2026 Academy Awards with an emotional message directed toward his longtime friend Martin Short.

After the night’s final award was announced on March 15 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, O’Brien wrapped up the ceremony by acknowledging Short, who has been mourning the recent loss of his daughter.

The Sweet Shoutout

As the broadcast came to a close, the host addressed the audience with a heartfelt sendoff.

“It’s been an honor and joy,” O’Brien said before adding a personal message: “We love you, Martin Short! Good night!”

The brief but meaningful moment resonated with viewers and those inside the theater, especially given the heartbreaking news that emerged just weeks earlier.

Short’s daughter, Katherine Hartley Short, died on Feb. 24 at the age of 42.

Following the tragedy, a representative for Short released a statement confirming the devastating loss.

“It is with profound grief that we confirm the passing of Katherine Hartley Short,” the statement read. “The Short family is devastated by this loss, and asks for privacy at this time.”

The message also highlighted how deeply she was loved by those around her.

“Katherine was beloved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought into the world,” the statement continued.

After her passing, neighbors and friends remembered her.

Katherine was described as being a “great neighbor and gardener,” with the source adding, “It’s incredibly sad.”

Short Has Stepped Away From the Spotlight

In the weeks since her death, Short has largely stepped away from public appearances and professional commitments as he grieves with his family.

His tour with actor Steve Martin was put on a brief hiatus, with it set to resume on April 11, per TMZ.

The loss marks another painful chapter for the actor, who previously experienced profound tragedy in 2010 when his wife, Nancy Dolman, died after battling ovarian cancer.

Dolman and Short had been married for three decades and shared three children together.

Short is widely known for his work in comedy and film, as well as his recent role on the hit series “Only Murders in the Building.”

Over the years, he has also built a close friendship with O’Brien, appearing frequently on the host’s television shows.

O’Brien’s brief tribute during the Oscars served as a quiet but powerful gesture of support for his friend during an incredibly difficult time.

While the ceremony celebrated the biggest achievements in film, the final words of the night reminded viewers that even amid Hollywood’s glamour, moments of compassion and solidarity still take center stage.
