Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell’s love story is one of the best in Hollywood.
The two have been together since 1983, but never married. And during a conversation with Entertainment Tonight, Hawn revealed the exact reason. And it is BEYOND heartfelt and sweet.
“We thought that by getting married that was actually going to take something from both of us that we didn’t want,” she said. “We want to choose each other every day.”
And with that, despite having been together for over 40 years, the two are content with not having the exact title of marriage.
“I don’t like ownership, you know? And I must say that I think Kurt feels the same way,” Hawn added. “I thought if I was a bird, and then someone put me in a cage, then they leave the door open, I’ll never fly out. If they close the door on me, I’d probably get rid of all my feathers and become a bird with no feathers.”
“I think that’s one of the areas where we all have to feel free to be who we are, and think the way we do,” she added. “And for those of us who are, basically, want to have a happy life, I think you want to be happy with yourself.”

In an interview with PEOPLE at the end of April, Hawn explained why she and Russell are truly a “perfect match.”
The answer: “Freedom”
“When I say freedom, it means liberation. I don’t feel penned in,” she explained. “We don’t always agree on stuff, which is fine. We’re both very spontaneous. [Our relationship] fed on a lot of goodness, a lot of wonderful life together.”
And when it comes to her family, that’s what the actress cares most about.
“My life’s mission is to be happy. My life’s mission is to be be an example for my children and my family,” she said, later adding that, “Wherever they are, I’m happy.”

When speaking with Entertainment Tonight in March 2026, Kurt Russell was flattered that there are people who say they want to Kurt and Goldie” their lives rather than get married.
“She’s a one-off human being. Just to have experienced her for this much of my life – I just feel like a lucky guy,” Russell said. “The aspect of being together for a long time, there’s no secret, it’s just a day-to-day reality and love is inexplicable, but it’s very powerful.”
While Hawn and Russell met while filming the Disney movie “The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band” in 1966, their love story officially began while working on the 1983 film “Swing Shift.” They welcomed a son, Wyatt Russell, together in 1986. Hawn had two children, Oliver Hudson and Kate Hudson, with Bill Hudson, while Russell shares Boston with his previous marriage to Season Hubley. They continued to collaborate on numerous projects, with one of their most famous being the 1987 comedy “Overboard.”
