Halle Berry says her key to finding a good relationship was to “stop chasing.” The star opened up about the dating breakthrough that finally led her to find real love in a podcast moment that is getting a lot of attention on X. The 59-year-old appeared on the “Sex With Emily” podcast in February 2026, and the portion of that interview where Halle shared the tip is sparking a lot of discussion after being spotlighted in a May 19 X post.
Halle Berry on the Importance of Not Chasing Love
In one part of the interview, Halle reflected on what she’s learned from her numerous marriages gone wrong, and why she almost gave up on love. “After three divorces, I really thought that I was done.”
The “Catwoman” star first got married back in 1993 to baseball star David Justice. The marriage lasted 4 years. Her next time at the altar was with R&B musician Eric Benét, to whom she was married from 2001 to 2005. Finally, Halle married French actor Olivier Martinez, with whom she shares a teenage son, in 2013. The pair called things off 3 years later.
The Oscar winner explained, “You know, you get to a point when you’ve gone through that three or four times, you start to think, ‘Well I guess a relationship like this isn’t for me. And I felt like I’d had enough, and I just wanted to have my career and raise my children. I would be good.”
Along with her son, Halle has an 18-year-old daughter, whom she welcomed with her former boyfriend Gabriel Aubry two years before their highly publicized split.
Opening up about the breakthrough she had, Halle explained, “But I realized that the minute you get good and you stop chasing that thing – I realized chasing that thing is what always allowed me to make the wrong choices. Right? Because I needed that thing. I thought that would complete me, like many of us do.”
She said the action that led to a shift was to give up on looking for a relationship, and prioritize herself and her own well-being and what she calls her “second act.” She says telling herself of dating, “This isn’t gonna be so important to me anymore” was the moment when “the perfect person showed up.”
That “perfect person” appears to be musician Van Hunt, who confirmed in February that he’s extended a proposal to the A-lister.
“I finally attracted what I was, but I finally was what I wanted to be,” she reflected.
Halle then said she doesn’t consider he exes “bad guys,” but merely sees the failed relationships as a result of attracting “a reflection of myself.” She acknowledged, “I wasn’t healed, I wasn’t whole, so I was attracting not healed, not whole partners.”
Is Halle Berry Engaged to Van Hunt?
Halle and Van Hunt cleared the air on their relationship status during a February 2026 appearance on “TODAY With Jenna & Friends.” They confirmed the singer has asked Halle to marry him, but she has yet to accept.
Van Hunt, 57, revealed that his proposal is “just out there floating” and joked to Jenna, “Maybe you can encourage her.”
Halle added, “I don’t think we need to be married to have a meaningful relationship. I don’t know if we will ever get married.”
