Panettiere began her career as a child actress, landing her first major break at four years old on the soap opera “One Life to Live.” She also appeared on “Guiding Light” from 1996 to 2000. However, her career began earlier, when her mother, soap opera actress Lesley Vogel, signed her with modeling agencies. That decision eventually catapulted Panettiere into stardom, with memorable roles in “Nashville,” “Heroes,” “Bring It On,” and “Scream 6.” But this fame came with a heartbreaking price.

“I always put high expectations on myself, so everything that happened… It’s not healthy to receive so much praise as a child,” Panettiere told The Independent. “So when I got to an age where I became somebody the paparazzi were interested in, and the media wanted all the gory details… it broke my heart that people thought negatively about me.”

In Panettiere’s interview, she also discussed how she associated her mother’s praise with affection. “Her opinions were the most important to me,” she said. “I associated praise with love. So being praised felt like being loved.”

At 19, while working on “Heroes,” Panettiere made the brave decision to cut ties professionally with her mom. “All I wanted was a dynamic that didn’t involve contracts, producers, boho tops, or drinking wine at industry parties,” she explained, The Independent reports. But her mother didn’t react as she’d hoped. Panettiere says she “picked up her purse, clenched her jaw, and looked straight at me. ‘You owe me.’” She then left her trailer. “I knew I’d done the right thing, but I sensed something in me had died,” Panettiere stated.

Panettiere said she wasn’t surprised by her mother’s reaction, but it was heartbreaking. “Having a normal relationship [with me] wasn’t something that interested her. And it was also maybe something she wasn’t even capable of.” At the time of her interview, she still hoped she and Vogel would reconnect.

In Panettiere’s memoir, “This Is Me: A Reckoning,” released on May 12, 2026, she gave a glimpse into her life and her relationship with her mother. Vogel released scathing statements about the book, and Panettiere responded in a statement to Entertainment Weekly in May.

“When people ask me about the relationship, if there’s any hope for the future, I always say that I leave that door cracked open in case because who doesn’t want a relationship with their mother? You pray for it and you hope it eventually comes, but she slammed that door pretty hard in my face,” Panettiere said. “She has very clearly prioritized herself, which I should not be shocked by. I can’t imagine how she feels about doing what she did and saying what she said. I don’t know how she lives with that.”
