Kurt Russell Responds to Fans Inspired by His Decades-Long Unmarried Romance

Kurt Russell is reacting to the growing number of fans who say they want to follow the same relationship path he and Goldie Hawn have taken for more than four decades.

During a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, the actor responded to people who jokingly say they want to “Kurt and Goldie” their lives rather than get married. Russell appeared flattered by the idea but made it clear that their long-lasting relationship has never followed a formula.

“She’s a one-off human being. Just to have experienced her for this much of my life – I just feel like a lucky guy,” Russell said during the interview.

The actor also noted that their relationship has endured simply because they have continued choosing each other over time.

“The aspect of being together for a long time, there’s no secret, it’s just a day-to-day reality and love is inexplicable but it’s very powerful,” he added.

Russell and Hawn have been together since 1983 and are widely considered one of Hollywood’s most enduring couples despite never marrying.

The two originally met years earlier while filming the Disney movie “The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band” in 1966. However, their romance did not begin until they reconnected while working on the 1983 film “Swing Shift,” according to People.

After they started dating, the couple went on to build a blended family together. They welcomed their son Wyatt Russell in 1986, while also raising children from previous relationships. Russell has a son, Boston, from his marriage to Season Hubley, and Hawn shares Oliver Hudson and Kate Hudson with her former partner Bill Hudson.

Over the years, the pair have also shared several professional collaborations. They famously starred together in the 1987 comedy “Overboard” and later reunited onscreen decades later in Netflix’s “The Christmas Chronicles,” where they played Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus.

The couple has also built a large extended family and are now grandparents to eight grandchildren.

Why Marriage Was Never Necessary

Despite their decades-long partnership, Russell and Hawn have consistently said they never felt the need to get married.

In a 2023 interview with Variety, Russell explained that people often questioned their decision not to tie the knot, especially during the early years of their relationship.

“We constantly got asked, ‘When are you going to get married? Why aren’t you married?’” Russell recalled at the time.

The actor said the couple never felt pressured to follow that expectation. In fact, they even asked their children whether it mattered to them that their parents were not married.

“We’d asked our kids if they cared about it. They didn’t. We didn’t,” he said.

Hawn has also spoken openly about why their relationship has lasted. During an appearance on “The Dan Buettner Podcast,” the actress explained that freedom and independence have played a major role in keeping their partnership strong, according to Business Insider.

For Russell, however, the explanation remains simple.

“The aspect of being together for a long time, there’s no secret, it’s just a day-to-day reality and love is inexplicable but it’s very powerful.”
