Michael B. Jordan had plenty to celebrate when he was nominated for his first Oscar yesterday for his role in “Sinners,” but there was one person he wanted to share the good news with first – his mom.
“We had a great conversation and she’s so happy and, you know, it all started with her,” Jordan, 38, said in an interview with “USA Today” published on Friday, January 23.
Of course, that wasn’t his only call and his phone was struggling to keep up.
“My battery’s already at like 12% and I had it on the charge all night. So the phone hasn’t really stopped,” the “Creed” star explained. “It’s a cool morning, man. Feeling good today!”

GettyWhile Jordan admitted he was “still processing” the news, he added that the record-breaking number of nominations for “Sinners” was “really great because I know how much everybody poured into this movie every day. For something so specific to be loved so universally is great.”
“Sinners,” directed by Ryan Coogler, was nominated for 16 different awards for this year’s Oscars, and Jordan thinks a lot of those were because the film is “a full meal.”
“You get a little bit of everything,” he continued.
In the film, Jordan stars in a dual role as twin brothers who return to their hometown in the Jim Crow era South hoping for a fresh star. Instead, they’re met with vampires that force them to come to grips with buried secrets and generational trauma. The unique mix of historical drama, horror and even a jaw-dropping musical number gave audiences one of the best films of the year.
“Listen, the word of mouth on this movie was incredible. The conversations that were had about the movie, it’s layered in a way that you want to go back and you want to make sure you saw what you saw,” Jordan told “USA Today.” “Did you get everything? There’s a replay value. It feels like a movie that you want to watch whenever it’s on.”

“I turned on YouTube when I woke up. Me and [wife] Zinzi [Coogler] sleep in the same room, so it was like, ‘Hey, get up,’” he said in an interview with “Variety” published on Thursday, January 22. “Very similar to how it’s been for 20-something years. It was no different from when we were in New Orleans or on other movies. It was nice to roll over and turn on YouTube. We were up late last night working, so we’re still waking up. We’re all in California, and we’ve gotta take the kids to school.”
“Sinners” was nominated for Best Picture, Best Directing, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Screenplay, Best Casting, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Film Editing, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Production Design, Best Original Score, Best Sound, Best Original Song and Best Visual Effects.
