What Is Galentine’s Day?
“Galentine’s Day is a celebration of female friendships,” according to History.com. Happening annually on February 13 — the day before Valentine’s Day — “the holiday originated on the hit NBC sitcom ‘Parks and Recreation.'”
“It’s an alternative to Valentine’s Day, created by the writers of ‘Parks and Rec,’” the beloved show’s star Amy Poehler explained on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” in 2020. “Leslie Knope [Poehler’s character] would get all her gals together and shower them with weird gifts.”
According to Knope, Galentine’s Day is “only the best day of the year.”
First popping up in “Parks and Recreation” Episode 16 of Season 2, it originally aired in February 2010.
People notes that, “[o]ff-screen, the concept of Galentine’s Day has caught on and become a holiday celebrated by many.”
