Sandra Bullock is back in the spotlight after four years away, and she’s finally explaining what pushed her to step away in the first place. The Practical Magic 2 star, 62, said she feared for her mental health as her longtime partner, Bryan Randall, privately battled ALS.
“When Bryan got sick, after [I filmed] Lost City, I was like, ‘I can’t.’ I thought I was going to have a little bit of a mental issue. I was like, ‘I can’t, I can’t, I can’t,'” Bullock said on the Monday, August 24, episode of the SmartLess podcast with Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Sean Hayes.
What Happened When Sandra Bullock Returned to Set?
The pressure became especially clear when Bullock returned for a reshoot two months after filming wrapped in the Dominican Republic. “I came for the reshoot on a couple of hours’ sleep, and I remember walking in and everyone went, ‘What, what, did you not sleep?!'” she said on the podcast.
“I looked so bad, and when I say so bad, like my face, it was horrific. I could maybe manage four hours of the reshoot and they were like, ‘Can you just give us [another take]?’ I was like, ‘I can’t, I can’t, I’ve got to go home.’ And I went home.”
She added a darkly funny coda to the memory: “The amount of money they had to spend to fix my face to match the rest of the film digitally. It was a horror show.”
Why Did Sandra Bullock Finally Step Away From Acting?
That experience, she says, cemented her decision. “So I did that and then I just pulled the plug,” Bullock said. “I said I can’t anymore. I have nothing to give right now. Nothing. Zero.”
Bullock had first announced during the March 2022 press tour for The Lost City that she planned to step away from acting “for a while,” in an interview with CBS News.
People reported that Randall died in August 2023 at 57 after a three-year battle with ALS, following his 2020 diagnosis.
Randall, a model turned photographer, met Bullock in 2015 after she hired him to photograph her son Louis’ fifth birthday party. The two were together for eight years.
How Did Sandra Bullock Cope While Keeping Randall’s Diagnosis Private?
GettyRandall’s diagnosis wasn’t made public until after his death, something Bullock has said was by his own request. “He asked me not to share,” she said. “I know why he asked me not to.” Still, she admitted the secrecy came at a cost. “Isolated me in the process,” she said.
Aside from her sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado, she kept the diagnosis to herself.
“Oh, I can handle that. I can be quiet,” she remembered telling herself. But juggling Randall’s care with raising two young kids during the pandemic became, in her words, “a trifecta that was pretty dark.”
“I started grieving Bryan four years before he passed,” she said. “Something in me said, ‘Start grieving now,’ because I knew I would be the caregiver.”
Three years after losing Randall, Bullock offered a rare glimpse into how her children navigated that period alongside her. Her son, Louis, 16, and daughter, Laila, 12, were by her side throughout.
“I can see and be around just about anything,” she said on the same episode, “but I had two young kids that were navigating it, especially a little girl who saw him as a father figure.”
