Kyle Richards Reveals the Simple Lesson She Learned Early on While Filming RHOBH

Kyle Richards is the only remaining original cast member on “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.” The mom of four has been on the Bravo reality show every season since its debut in 2010—15 in total. But early on, she learned an important lesson about how she wanted to be portrayed on camera.

In a December 2025 interview with Extra, Richards, 56, looked back on the first time producers came to her home to film.

“You know, I think in the beginning, I remember when the first day of filming, they said, ‘We’re going to come to your house early in the morning and watch you get up with the kids and get them ready for school,’” she recalled.

“And I thought, well, I need to go out and buy a beautiful night gown at Saks. If they saw that I’m wearing my Target pajamas, this is embarrassing. So, I went out, I bought that white gown, and I’ve never worn that again.”

“And I learned quickly like that’s just not me,” she shared. “And you know, so that was very much in the beginning. So, at least now I know that even if I make a mistake, I can own it. It’s who I am. And you know, you move forward and you learn from your mistakes.”

Richards is grateful for her many years on RHOBH. She told Vogue in an interview that while she had “some difficult times on the show,” she “wouldn’t have done it any other way.”

“It’s opened so many doors, and my family has been so supported,” she added in the 2022 interview. “All of my daughters’ milestones have also been documented, so when I have grandchildren in the future, they will also be able to view our family through the show.”

The one regret Richards had was with some of her early fashion choices.

“Sometimes, when there are flashbacks to the first season, I’m horrified by what I’m wearing,” she admitted. “However, there are some items that I’ll always love, like good jeans, sneakers, sweaters from The Elder Statesman, and kaftans. People make fun of my kaftans, but I think they’re really chic and remind me of yacht holiday photos by Slim Aarons.”

Kyle Richards Joined RHOBH So She Could Be Home With Her Kids, but She Wasn’t Sure It Would Be a Hit

When Richards joined RHOBH, her youngest daughter, Portia, was still a baby. Richards told Us Weekly that despite her initial reservations about joining a reality show, she agreed to it so she could be home with her kids.

“I didn’t want to do it because I’m an actress. But it kept coming up, and Portia was little, so I was like, ‘I can just hang out with my kids, and they can follow me around,'” she said “I was very naive.”

“It was such a different time. I had a Blackberry back then — that’s how you know the show is old!” the RHOBH OG added. “[While filming] I kept going up to our showrunner and saying, ‘Is this a good show? Do people want to watch this?’ And he said, ‘Oh yeah.’ I didn’t get it,” Richards added. “And now here we are.”

  1. I loved watching you and your family grow up such beautiful young women. Because you are sensitive, and still fight back, I’m proud of you. We only saw the fun parts of raising four daughters, but I know it must have been hard. Please reconcile with Mo. it makes me mad that you wanted to grow and he took it to the next level. Soon grandchildren will come and it will be miserable if he moved on with a bimbo.
