Long-Running FOX Reality Competition Won’t Return

The hit FOX competition show “So You Think You Can Dance” has officially been canceled.

Fox Television Network president Michael Thorn confirmed on Sunday, May 10, that “SYTYCD” won’t be returning to the network after 18 seasons.

“Obviously, a really important show in the history of Fox, and right now, there’s no plans to order another season,” Thorn said, according to Deadline. “And you know, we’ve had conversations about it, but nothing formal.”

“SYTYCD” hit the ground running in 2005, one month after its direct competitor “Dancing with the Stars” launched its first season on ABC.

Notable Stars From FOX’s ‘So You Think You Can Dance’

For 21 years, “SYTYCD” managed to stay relevant among fellow competition shows. Despite nearly 20 judges cycling through the long-running reality series, including Paula Abdul, JoJo Siwa, Leah Remini, Vanessa Hudgens, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, and many more, the FOX competition show’s later seasons didn’t quite hit the mark with fans.

Fans of “So You Think You Can Dance” agreed in a Reddit thread that several of its first seasons were ideal because they felt that “the audience truly picked the winner.” One fan noted that season 3 was “so good and polished” because of the banter and commentary from judges Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy, as well as host Cat Deeley.

Over the years, “SYTYCD” helped launch many phenomenal dancers into stardom. Notable dancers include singer-songwriter Tate McRae, “DWTS” pros Witney Carson and Jenna Johnson, Academy Award winner Ariana DeBose, Emmy Award-winning choreographer Travis Hall, revered ballet soloist Alex Wong, and more.

Rob Wade, CEO of FOX Entertainment, said in a press announcement for the network that focusing on shows that hold longevity for their target audience was the driving force behind deciding what to greenlight for the 2026-2027 season.

“Our 2026-27 slate reflects what FOX does best — putting creative first with distinctive, returnable series and bold, character-driven storytelling,” Wade stated. “With a strong foundation of returning hits and a carefully curated pipeline of new original series, we’re building a lineup designed to connect with broad audiences, drive performance in both the U.S. and around the world, and bring the consistency, scale, and momentum that position us strongly for the year ahead.”

Exciting 2026-2027 Lineup for the FOX Network

Several renewed FOX reality series for the 2026-2027 lineup include “The Masked Singer” (season 15), “Next Level Baker” (seasons 2 and 3), “Next Level Chef” (season 6), “99 to Beat” (season 2), and “Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test” (season 5).

According to FOX Television Network’s press release, notable shows returning to the network for the upcoming season include “The Simpsons,” “Family Guy,” “Bob’s Burgers,” and “American Dad.”

The drama series “Baywatch,” which was rebooted in 2025, was also renewed for the 2026-2027 FOX Network lineup. The original series initially premiered in 1989 and later became Pamela Anderson’s mainstay before she skyrocketed to Hollywood stardom.

Popular stars cast in the rebooted “Baywatch” include Shay Mitchell from “Pretty Little Liars,” model Brooks Nadar, collegiate gymnast Livvy Dunne, social media influencer Noah Beck, and more.
