Cameron Mathison Shares Important Message After Daughter Upset by Fan Comments

“General Hospital” actor Cameron Mathison used a personal family moment to create an important dialogue about the impact of social media comments on actors and their loved ones. The veteran performer shared an emotional Instagram video featuring a conversation with his 19-year-old daughter Leila, who had become distressed after reading harsh online reactions to his character Drew Cain.

The incident began when Leila discovered a YouTube compilation video showcasing some of Drew’s most controversial moments on the ABC daytime drama. While she initially found it entertaining to watch her father portray a character so different from his real personality, her experience quickly turned upsetting when she ventured into the comments section.

The emotional toll of reading aggressive comments prompted Leila to reach out to her father via FaceTime while he was at the gym. Her visible distress in that conversation prompted Mathison’s social media response, which has since garnered widespread support from both colleagues and fans.

A Father’s Gentle Reminder

Mathison shared the details of his daughter’s experience with his Instagram followers, explaining why the situation affected her so deeply. “She was watching my character Drew Cain on General Hospital, and I guess it was like a compilation thing on YouTube and [about] me being a horrible human being, and then she made the mistake of also reading the comments from people,” he explained.

The actor described how the negative comments had crossed from criticism of his character into personal attacks. “There was so much hate and aggression towards mostly my character but partially me too,” he continued, emphasizing how the boundary between fictional criticism and personal hostility had become blurred.

“I guess I’m just putting out there that remember when you’re making these comments and saying things about people that they have kids and their families and good friends,” Mathison shared. “Obviously, everybody’s totally free to say what they want, but at the same time, I thought I’d just make this little Instagram reel to encourage people to keep that in mind.”

In his Instagram post, Mathison reinforced this message with additional context. “Just posting this as a gentle reminder that when we make comments on social media, these people have kids and families and friends and are real people,” he wrote. “Remember everyone, it’s just a character and I’m just doing my job.”

The actor said he loves his job and asked viewers to understand his position. “I love my job and I’m so grateful for all the support that I’ve got through the years, believe me. But maybe this post will help keep in mind that there’s other things to consider,” he added.

Community Support and Professional Solidarity

The response from Mathison’s “General Hospital” colleagues was immediate and overwhelmingly supportive. Several cast members publicly defended both his character and personal integrity through social media comments.

Katelyn MacMullen, who portrays Willow Tait and works closely with Mathison in current storylines, simply wrote “Love you Cam!”

Maurice Benard, who plays Sonny Corinthos, offered more forceful support. “If you mess with Cameron, you’re gonna have to mess with me, and I don’t think you wanna do that,” he commented.

Rory Gibson, who plays Michael Corinthos and shares scenes with Mathison as Drew’s nephew, praised the actor’s professionalism. “The most kind, chill, generous guy on set,” he wrote.

Asher Antonyzyn, who plays Danny Morgan, added his personal appreciation for Mathison’s mentorship. “Cam- you’re one of the coolest and kindest people I know. Thank you for everything you’ve taught me—it’s always a blast being on screen with you,” he shared.

The fan response also trended positive, with many viewers expressing admiration for Mathison’s acting skills while clearly separating their feelings about Drew from their respect for the performer. Leila herself later commented on the post, “This comment section restored my faith in the GH watchers!!”
