‘Days of Our Lives’ alum Patrick Muldoon has sadly passed away at age 57. The actor was best known for his role as Austin Reed on the show, which he played on and off for two decades. Following his unexpected death, Muldoon’s final scene on the hit Peacock soap hits differently, making it more heartbreaking than it was back in the day.
Patrick Muldoon’s Final ‘Days of Our Lives’ Scene
In 1992, Muldoon burst into the soap world, landing the role of bad boy Austin, who captured the heart of sweet teen Carrie Brady (Christie Clark). They were a beloved couple on “Days of Our Lives” that, in true soap fashion, were put through the wringer before finding happiness.
Muldoon played Austin until 1995 when he left the soap to go play Richard Heart on “Melrose Place.” In 2011, after a 16-year hiatus, Muldoon returned to the role of Austin, where he remained until his 2012 exit.
It was only fitting that Muldoon’s last scene on the soap was with Clark as Austin and Carrie said goodbye to Salem. The episode aired on July 12, 2012, and kicked off with an emotional Austin at the Brady Pub.
Austin is alone, having a moment as he prepares to leave Salem for Switzerland. Just as he’s about to leave, Carrie arrives to tell him, “I hear Switzerland is beautiful this time of year.”
It was a touching scene, filled with emotion, as Austin and Carrie set off to begin their new life together. Muldoon and Clark were on fire per usual. The two had amazing chemistry, and it showed in the scene.
Their two-decade-long history was front and center, playing two characters who finally got their happy ending. Clark and Muldoon’s emotions on leaving the show also came through in the very touching and fitting scene.
Nearly a decade after leaving Austin behind, Muldoon reprised their roles of Austin on the “Days of Our Lives” spin-off, “Beyond Salem” on Peacock, along with Clark as Carrie.
Patrick Muldoon Sparked ‘Days of Our Lives’ Return Rumors
In 2025, Muldoon got fans in a frenzy when he was spotted on the “Days of Our Lives” set. The actor posted a video of him to Instagram, looking confused about where to go backstage.
“I’m in Salem,” he declared, adding, “It feels good to be back.”
It was a funny bit that had fans convinced that Muldoon was announcing he was back to play Austin again. Sadly, that was not the case. A spokesperson for the soap confirmed to Soap Opera Digest that Muldoon was not back on the show but was just visiting some friends on set and decided to do the fun video.
RIP Patrick Muldoon!
