‘General Hospital’s Laura Wright Defends Cameron Mathison Amid Drew Hate With Passionate Reminder

Soaps are known for villainous characters that are sometimes loved by fans and other times despised. The latter is the case with Drew (Cameron Mathison) on “General Hospital.” Even after being shot and locked in, Drew remains a terrible person to say the least, earning a slew of backlash from fans. “General Hospital” star Laura Wright (Carly) has shared a passionate reminder to soap fans, standing up for Mathison as online hate for Drew heats up.

Laura Wright Defends ‘General Hospital’ Co-Star Cameron Mathison Amid Drew Hate

In a recent interview with Soaps, Wright got brutally honest about the hate being directed at Mathison and his alter ego.

“You have to have characters like Drew that mess everything up and annoy your heroines or heroes,” she expressed before adding that she knows fans are not happy with the direction of Drew.

Wright explained that this is where “General Hospital” is right now with the character of Drew. She gave Mathison props for diving into this side of Drew, even amid the backlash and hate, which is something she doesn’t understand.

The actress then defended Mathison, issuing a reminder to soap fans about the genre.

“As much as I love the passion of our daytime fans, I just don’t want them to lose sight of the fact that it is a story, it’s not real,” she stated. “He’s an actor. He is not Drew.”

Wright fully gets the passion fans feel for the show and its characters. She, too, gets that way as a TV watcher, so there is no “shame” or “blame” in how fans feel about a character on “General Hospital”. The fact is, though, that soaps are filled with messy characters and storylines. It’s literally what the genre was built on, and Wright would hate for that to change.

“I understand feeling like you want to wring the neck of the character. But that’s what we love about our flawed characters,” Wright declared.

The soap star isn’t the only one of Mathison’s colleagues who has defended him amid all the hate for his alter ego.

Bradford Anderdon Calls Cameron Mathison ‘So Kind’

When Mathison appears in Hallmark or Great American Family movies, he plays the beloved leading man. Mathison has spent years playing the good guy for both networks.

However, that is not the case with the character of Drew on “General Hospital.”  Drew is a villain through and through, which has led Mathison to face the wrath of soap fans in public. The Hannah Swensen alum once recounted a grocery store encounter in which things were thrown at him because of a fan’s dislike of Drew.

Last year, Bradford Anderson (Spinelli) had some kind words for Mathison as the hate for Drew exploded. On his podcast, That’s Awesome with Steve Burton & Bradford Anderson, the latter pointed out the best in Mathison.

“He’s such a kind, on-the-level kind and considerate. So when he’s playing the Drew stuff, like he’ll do something nuts and then just come out of character, it’s so different. It’s just so funny cause they are so far apart, reality, and on-screen is so far apart,” Anderson shared, and his co-host Steve Burton (Jason) agreed.

Drew may be hated in Port Charles, but Mathison’s co-stars have nothing but love for the actor and want fans to know it.
