Carson Daly Can Override Coaches’ Decisions on New Season of ‘The Voice’

For the first time in 14 years on “The Voice,” host Carson Daly will have a say in which contestants get through the Blind Auditions.

At the end of a new promo for season 28, which NBC released on September 3, 2025, a new feature is revealed called the “Carson Callback.”

Over footage of coaches Michael Bublé, Reba McEntireNiall Horan and Snoop Dogg looking stunned, Daly says, “Sometimes I see great singers fall through the cracks and I’ve never been able to do anything about it until right now.”

Fans Think Giving Carson Daly More Power is an ‘Iconic’ Move

In the trailer for season 28, as the new “Carson Callback” is revealed, Bublé exclaims, “What is happening, Carson Daly?”

NBC hasn’t provided details yet on when or how often Carson will get to bring back a contestant that the coaches didn’t turn their chairs for. But fans seem pumped that he’s getting a little more power.

One wrote on YouTube, “Omg this season is going to be on 🔥! The Carson Callback button is here. Let’s go!!!”

Another chimed in, “Omg I’m so excited that Carson is playing a bigger part this season!”

Someone exclaimed on Instagram, “CARSON CALLBACK! That’s iconic!!”

Another fan agreed, “Carson callback!! That’s so awesome!! This season is going to be epic!!🔥❤️”

️Carson Daly Has Said He’s Had Lots of ‘Heavy Moments’ With Contestants & Their Families Behind the Scenes

One of Daly’s jobs on “The Voice” is to stand with the families or friends who have accompanied each contestant to the Blind Auditions, and watch to see whether any of the coaches turn their chairs.

“I really love being with the families when their loved ones are auditioning,” he told Gold Derby in 2024. “I just like to make them feel at home because, look, 90% of the people — 99% of the people are … out of their comfort zones, they’ve flown into the airport and then we have them, you know, sequestered in a hotel. And I really enjoy the opportunity to try and put family sort of at ease and make them feel welcome.”

“All all that stuff gets edited out,” he continued, “so they always present all that stuff in a good light, but there are a lot of … heavy moments. You know, their loved ones are out there for 90 seconds and if for some reason a chair doesn’t turn, there are people that it’s like a funeral (for).”

“The Voice” returns for season 28 on September 22 at 8 p.m. Eastern time.
