The stars of “House” and “Parks and Recreation” are joining forces for a new comedy for the Peacock streaming service.
In “Dig,” Hugh Laurie and Amy Poehler head the cast, with Peacock releasing first-look images of the upcoming series set in the world of archeology.
About ‘Dig’
The series “follows a team of dedicated archaeologists (and less-dedicated college students) who spend their summer working on a dig site in Greece,” notes Peacock’s synopsis.
Poehler will play an archeologist named Elise. Laurie will portray Neville, a British professor who loves archeology while battling to preserve the traditions of his dying profession, fancying himself a mentor to the young students working on a dig site.
“Their discovery of a rare artifact sends them on the adventure of a lifetime,” the brief synopsis concludes.
The long-buried treasure they unearth holds the potential to rewrite history, with the archeologists suddenly finding themselves at the center of a high-stakes international conspiracy.
In addition to Laurie and Poehler, “Dig” also stars Geraldine Viswanathan, Antonia Thomas and Fina Strazza. The guest cast includes Kayvan Novak, Jon Pointing and Bonita Friedericy.
A ‘Parks and Rec’ Reunion
PeacockNot only does “Dig” represent Poehler’s return to television, it also marks her reunion with “Parks and Recreation” creator Michael Schur, who is showrunner of the new series.
Schur and Poehler co-wrote the pilot episode, and both will also serve as executive producers on the series.
J.J. Philbin also serves as a writer and executive producer, while other producers include Morgan Sackett, Dean Holland, Kate Arend, Jordan Grief, Dave Becky, David Miner and Sharon Jackson for Ocean Avenue.
The 10-episode series is based on the novel “Excavations” by Kate Myers, who is also an exec producer.
A Long Time Coming
PeacockPoehler and Schur first announced plans for the series in May 2025, after Poehler had cited Myers’ novel as one of her favorite reads of 2024 while appearing on “Late Night with Seth Myers.”
“It’s about women descending on an archeological dig site,” Poehler said, via NBC.
“I love the idea of digging things up, things being buried. But I always want to know, if you watch TikTok and you see things being uncovered: Did they just put it there?” Poehler joked.
In a 2023 interview with MomTrends, the author of the book upon which the series is based explained how she came up with the concept for “Excavations.”
“I studied archaeology in college and after graduation had zero career plans so I spent a few months on a dig in Greece, not dissimilar to the one in the book — on a mountain, an Olympic-related site,” Myers recalled.
“Free trip to Greece with the university in exchange for free labor, I was in!” she added. “It’s a great setting for drama, obviously all the excitement around finding something exciting, but on a more day-to-day level, it’s a workplace like anywhere else with all the kooky colleagues and bad bosses.”
