2026 has been a solid year for television so far, with smash hits like season 2 of “The Pitt” and the recent hit “Lanterns.” However, another of the most talked-about and critically acclaimed shows is Hulu’s thriller series”Furious,” which stars “Shameless” alum Emmy Rossum. Now, ahead of its first season finale, the show has been renewed.
“Furious” premiered on July 27, with its first three episodes debuting simultaneously. In addition to Rossum, the show stars Lola Petticrew, Scoot McNairy, Quincy Tyler Bernstine, and Jake Lacy.
It’s Unclear When Hulu Will Premiere ‘Furious’ Season 2
The official Hulu channel on various social media platforms posted a video of Rossum announcing that the hit series had been renewed for a second season. She began by introducing herself, then said, “I am thrilled to officially announce that ‘Furious’ has been renewed for a second season.”
After that, she stated, “We are so overwhelmed and grateful for the love and support that you have shown for our first season.” Rossum then teased the show’s season finale, reminding fans that it airs on August 31 on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+.
The “Shameless” alum added, “I can’t wait to make more.” As of right now, it’s unclear when development on the second season will begin.
‘Furious’ Has Solid Reviews
GettyRegarding reviews, “Furious” currently sits at a stellar 98% positive rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Likewise, the Rossum-led series has an 89% rating from audience members who have entered reviews on the platform.
A critic from the “For Your Reference” podcast said, “From storytelling to performances, Furious is succeeding in feminine rage that previous offerings never quite got right. The intersectionality of feminine rage from race to class is embraced, and the strength of this show.”
CBC Radio said, “This is a show willing to sit in really heavy emotional and moral confusion, where people’s actions don’t often make sense. Nor do they need to make sense.”
JoBlo’s Movie Network wrote, “By the halfway mark of the season, you will question whether you like the good guys or the antagonist, but you will not be able to stop watching until you find out the resolution to this tale in the final chapter.”
Lastly, Empire Magazine stated of “Furious,” “Compelling and defiantly complex, Furious shifts the crime genre into vital new territory, reframing the scope and potential of crime dramas in their approach to female victimhood.”
It should be noted that Hulu has not released viewership information about the series. However, according to Deadline, it is believed to have made Nielsen’s Top 10 chart for streaming originals upon its release, despite releasing only three episodes.
The show has also been a fixture on Luminate’s chart, garnering 2.43 million views in its first week and landing at number five.
The ‘Shameless’ Alum Opened Up About Her Inspiration for the Show
Getty“Furious” was developed through Rossum’s production company, Composition Eight. Notably, the series is loosely based on the 1987 film “Black Widow.” Ahead of the show’s release, Rossum spoke to Backstage, revealing what inspired her to develop the show, which Hulu first announced in March 2025.
She said, “I was looking for an idea. I was looking for something that would be fertile ground or give me a character that was as rich, or had the potential to be as rich and as exciting, as I found Fiona Gallagher. I was really looking for something that I could sink my teeth into.”
The actress continued, “When I saw “Black Widow,” which starred Deborah Winger and Theresa Russell, who I’d worked with on a movie called “Passionada” when I was 14, I thought it was a really good skeleton.
It’s kind of a strange film, kind of a cult film. It starts off as a traditional cat-and-mouse. It’s about an underestimated FBI agent played by Deborah Winger, who also has curly hair. Which I was like, OK, I can see myself in this role.”
