“Star Wars: Mandalorian & Grogu” enjoyed an epic 103-day theatrical run before it officially heads to streaming. The film, directed by Jon Favreau, grossed $345 million worldwide and became both a commercial and critical success, with a 60 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Now, Disney+ has set the streaming release date for the latest in the “Star Wars” saga.
‘Mandalorian & Grogu’ Comes to Disney+ in September
“Star Wars: Mandalorian & Grogu” will stream exclusively on Disney+ starting on September 2, 2026.
The New Republic seeks Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his young apprentice Grogu to help keep the galaxy intact following the Empire’s fall. Countless warlords remain spread throughout the universe and threaten to squash what the New Republic could become.
Favreau, who also helms the streamer’s “The Mandalorian” TV series, sees carrying on the “Star Wars” legacy as an important cultural honor. “Each generation passes on that responsibility to the next, and it is our job to prepare the next generation for when they have to step into our shoes,” the director told StarWars.com. “I think that’s part of what we were able to explore more fully with this film. His species lives a very long time, and you want to make sure that he’s prepared for the challenges that await him.”
Season 4 of ‘The Mandalorian’ Still Happening
Despite the online rumor mill, “The Mandalorian” story will continue with a season four. Jon Favreau confirmed that they “were planning on doing a fourth season,” he told Empire Magazine in the May 2026 issue. “I had actually written all of that. I still have Season 4 sitting on my desk here,” he added.
In September 2024, industry insider Daniel Richtman shared in a now-deleted post on Twitter/X that “there will not be a 4th season of ‘The Mandalorian,'” as reported by Comic Basics. The tidbit fueled speculation about the uncertainty of the show’s future, with actor Brendan Wayne, who plays Din Djarin, also stating that the show was not moving forward with more seasons while appearing on the YouTube show, “The Chatooine Show.”
As far as making “Star Wars: Mandalorian & Grogu,” Favreau had his work cut out for him. With the streaming age, there comes increased pressure to fit a film, particularly coming off season three of “The Mandalorian,” to catch up audiences who may not be clued into a streaming show. “I have to operate under the assumption that there are people that weren’t old enough to go to the theaters to watch ‘Star Wars’ when the last film was out,” he told “CBS Sunday Morning,” noting the seven-year gap between films. “I can’t assume they know anything about any of this.”
“You have to make this an introduction to a new audience who might be approaching it,” he said. Favreau also discussed the delicate balance of including characters and homages to classic “Star Wars” films for fans who have followed the franchise since 1977. Having grown up on the iconic films, he mentioned that the communal experience of seeing “Star Wars” on the big screen is irreplaceable.
“It was about the crowd, the energy in the room,” he said, adding that the feeling of being part of “a group of people that have been working on this for so long together, and for us to get the opportunity to make a case” for a theatrical release has been worthwhile.
