“Friends” is one of those shows that has stood the test of time, becoming a binge-worthy classic in households across the globe. But it could have looked incredibly different if Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox had done one specific thing differently in their auditioning process.

However she spoke with Jennifer, who had originally auditioned to play the role of Monica, and the ladies decided to ask the show’s producers if they were able to swap parts before any filming started.
Both girls had strong reasons as to why they felt more like the other part fitted them better. Speaking to Today, Courteney shared how she felt like the description of Monica being someone who likes to feel in control suited her. She said: “For some reason, I thought I related more to Monica, which maybe it’s because I do. I’m very similar to her… I’m not as clean as Monica, but I am neat. And I’m not as competitive, even though some people, my partner (musician) Johnny McDaid, would say I am.”
Courteney continued to gush: “That was lightning in a bottle, to have those writers, those creators of the show and the team they put together, and the actors. It just worked. I mean, the casting was perfect. It really was.”
Meanwhile Jennifer didn’t originally beeline for the role of Rachel Green as she was worried she was going to be seen as a one trick wonder, only able to play roles where she’s a “girl-next-door” type. She explained to The Hollywood Reporter: “It was a terrifying, risky thing. But I just said, ‘You’ve got to try. At this point, who cares? If you fall flat on your face, fine, you fall flat on your face.'”
At the time Jennifer wasn’t as big in the world of film and television, but her massive success in “Friends” projectiled her career into the spotlight
About ‘Friends’ And Its Success
“Friends” premiered its first episode on September 22, 1994 on NBC. The show ended up gaining popularity and continued producing episodes for a solid decade before it concluded its tenth and final season in May of 2004. The creators and cast of the show felt that it had come to a natural end, and the cast felt ready to move onto other things.
Through 236 episodes six friends – Monica, Rache, Phoebe, Joey, Chandler and Ross – navigated the ups and downs of a life, relationships, and friendships, bringing viewers along with them for the laughs, emotional moments and everything in between.
The TV show went on to win six Emmy awards including Outstanding Comedy Series in 2022, Outstanding Lead Actress (Jennifer Aniston, 2002), and Outstanding Support Actress (Lisa Kudrow, 1998). “Friends” also received awards from the Screen Actors Guild, the Golden Globes, People’s Choice, Teen Choice, the BAFTAs, and the Logie’s.
