Sandra Bullock is promoting “Practical Magic 2,” the sequel to the beloved 1998 classic. In it, she reprises her role as Sally Owens and stars opposite Nicole Kidman as her sister, Gillian Owens. Bullock’s character has two children, mirroring her own life as a mother of two.

Bullock adopted her son, Louis Bardo Bullock, in 2010, and five years later, in 2015, she adopted her daughter, Laila Bullock. In an interview with People, published on Thursday, August 27, and conducted at the European premiere of “Practical Magic 2,” she was asked about her character’s protectiveness and whether she could relate. “Oh god, yes,” she admitted. “I’m all over [it].”
She continued, “The fearfulness of what I think to be normal, that is me to the core. And my children will tell you the same.” However, Bullock understands that negative experiences cannot be prevented, and they will ultimately shape your character.
“I think any mother will tell you [that] all you want is for them to not have the same pain as you did. But guess what? That’s not their journey,” she said. “The pains make you the full, rounded person that you’re supposed to be.” These rare comments on motherhood give a glimpse into Bullock’s life.
Sandra Bullock Returns to the Public Eye
Bullock’s return to the public eye has been welcomed by fans, and she has used the opportunity to promote her new film and update fans on what’s been happening in her life. The actress has bravely opened up about her relationship with Bryan Randall, who died in August 2023. He was 57. In 2020, Randall was diagnosed with the nervous system disease ALS, and he received care at home.
Randall wanted to keep his health struggles private, and Bullock honored that. However, in an appearance on the SmartLess podcast hosted by Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, and Sean Hayes, she spoke about her two children and how they reacted to Randall’s diagnosis. Of her son and daughter, Bullock said they were “very, very astute kids.” She added, “Very astute, because they not only see the physical change; there’s a behavior that changes in all of us. You know, I’m hyper vigilant.”
Bullock revealed how her children reacted to Randall’s declining health in very different ways. “Louis handled it very different than Laila. About two years before Brian passed, he saw it was a dynamic that wasn’t healthy for him to be around,” Bullock said, Entertainment Weekly reports. “So, he’s very evolved. He’s like, you know what, I’m here for you.”
The “Gravity” star explained that Louis chose to “disengage” himself. By contrast, Laila wanted to be closer to Randall. “Laila, on the other hand, was more bonded until about six months out,” Bullock recalled. “And then she says, ‘Can you please say no when they call me over to go visit?’ And I said, ‘Absolutely.’ I said, ‘But if you do want to go visit, I will come with you, and I will be right there. And if you tap out, I am right there.’”
