Craig Conover has an explanation for his dramatically different appearance.
The “Southern Charm” star recently sparked questions from fans after a photo of him posing with fans showed him sporting a much scruffier look than viewers are accustomed to seeing. Some fans compared the reality star to Wolverine and Phil Miller from “The Last Man on Earth.”
Conover, 37, subsequently revealed that the transformation is tied to a new acting project.
After Bravo Boo shared the photo on Instagram and asked, “What’s going on with Craig,” commenters offered their own theories about the reality star’s disheveled appearance.
The New Look Is For a Project
“Well, he was just here in Australia … we have that [effect] on people,” one person joked.
Another added, “Leave @caconover alone! He’s protected wildlife! We love him!”
Conover later addressed the speculation directly on his Instagram Story, explaining that his appearance was part of a role.
“I’m filming a project. We just wrapped. It’s 12-hour days when you do scripted stuff. I thought [it] was very clear that I don’t look like that. Maybe I do. Anyway, even if I did look like that, we’re here to entertain y’all. Life is short. Have fun. Smile more. Laugh. And yes, I’m on a scripted project. That’s my character that I’m playing at some point,” he explained per Reality Blurb.
Although Conover said he “can’t reveal too much,” he has already offered fans some clues about what he has been working on.
Last week, the “Southern Charm” personality shared a clip from the production of “Caroline Fletcher,” revealing that his character is named Marcus.
News of Conover’s involvement in the indie dramedy was reported in early August. The project also stars Chris Elliott, known for “Schitt’s Creek,” and Caroline Aaron of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Caroline Fletcher” centers on an 11-year-old girl who navigates a difficult working-class upbringing and turns to conning as a way to survive. After her mother is arrested and a local bully threatens her family, she sets out to pull off what becomes the biggest scheme of her young life.
Conover Previously Asked for Hair Help
Conover previously gave fans another glimpse into his acting transformation when he posted a video asking for help with his growing hair.
He described the request as a “long hair assistance” video and said he had been growing it out for an acting project.
The new role marks another step into scripted entertainment for Conover, who recently signed with Innovative Artists Entertainment for representation across all areas.
Of course, acting is only one part of Conover’s career. The reality star is also the founder of Sewing Down South, a lifestyle company built around his longtime interest in sewing. The business became a notable part of his “Southern Charm” storyline before expanding into an e-commerce operation and retail partnerships.
For now, Conover is keeping the details of his latest acting role under wraps. But his new look has already accomplished one thing: It got “Southern Charm” fans talking.
