Halloween Night in the Ballroom

We have the stars, co-hosts, and judges (including guest judge Cheryl Burke) in place. So, I guess it’s time to get things started. Elaine Hendrix hurt herself during rehearsals today, so she is at the hospital. She and Alan won’t be performing tonight, but they are still in the competition. Alfonso said they’d explain more later.

Whitney Leavitt & Mark Ballas on ‘Dancing With the Stars’

They got the first 10s of the season last week. They are on top of the leaderboard, but Whitney is feeling overwhelmed and anxious. She has a lot on her plate, so she said she is letting out her best scream for Halloween to release some stress. For tonight, they are performing a Jazz to “Brain Stew” by Green Day.

This was a good routine, but I felt like they were off at times. Something about it felt off to me, like the music or something. Not as intense as they have been at their best.

Judges’ Feedback: Cheryl said their partnership continues to impress her every week, but watch the timing. Bruno said that was truly a mind-blowing routine. They put a lot of jazz styles in there; it was unbelievable. Carrie Ann said she loves everything they did, but they were slightly out of sync tonight. Derek said this was no tricks and all treats.

Judges’ Scores: 37 out of 40

Jordan Chiles & Ezra Sosa

The other 10s from week 6 went to this couple. Now she wants to be on top of the leaderboard by herself. She no longer wants to share it! For tonight, they will be performing a Contemporary to “Elastic Heart” by Sia. They are taking a big risk and wearing a harness tonight.

I knew this one was going to be amazing! The harness was a great addition, and they started so strongly with it. It was intense with their makeup, but they were free and did so good. This was their best performance of the season, by far!

Judges’ Feedback: Bruno said nothing can hold her back because she believes. Carrie Ann said she loved she was exploring new movement vocabulary. Derek said the execution wasn’t fully executed. Cheryl said she wants to see the trust and bond through their movements.

Judges’ Scores: 34 out of 40

Andy Richter & Emma Slater on ‘Dancing With the Stars’

The Andy fans have a new nickname, called the Fandys. For tonight, they are performing a Paso Doble to “Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, Op. 67: I. Allegro con brio” by Ludwig van Beethoven. For this dance, he will be performing as a priest.

While the world seems to love Andy, and I do too, he is far behind everyone else when it comes to these dances. He seems slower, and it just all seems so forced to me.

Judges’ Feedback: Carrie Ann said he has some kind of mystery magic happening, and he keeps getting better every week. His posture improved this week. Derek said he is out there, and he is doing it, and he is committing. Cheryl said he is the heart of this show. Bruno said he captured the paso doble well.

Judges’ Scores: 28 out of 40

Elaine Hendrix & Alan Bersten

Elaine is still at the hospital, but they are going to show their story for the week right now. She is all about injuries, as she ripped skin off the bottom of her foot. She is trying not to do anything damaging to herself during the week. For the week, they were to perform an Argentine Tango to “Bad to the Bone” by 2WEI and Bri Bryant.

However, she hurt herself and something with her ribs, so she went to the hospital. The doctors cleared her to remain in the competition, but she can’t perform tonight. Based on the rules, she will be judged by her last full rehearsal for this dance, which we watched now.

You can tell she is in pain, but she definitely worked it out on this one. She is good, and this was a very good routine, especially just for a dress rehearsal. Imagine if it were live?

Judges’ Feedback: Derek said she is a born performer, still so impressive. Cheryl said she is a huge fan. Bruno said Alan did a great job. The lines, the choreography, and the placement. Carrie Ann said she was looking hot and sexy; she’s gotta come back.

Judges’ Scores: 32 out of 40

Danielle Fishel & Pasha Paskov

She said she felt very present on the dancefloor and in her body last week. She said she finally rose to the occasion and got their highest score of the week. For tonight, they will be dancing a Viennese Waltz to “Die With A Smile” by Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars.

I think they had a good routine. The story they were trying to tell didn’t seem to work for me, but I think they had a good dance still.

Judges’ Feedback: Cheryl said what a proper Viennese Waltz. She wants to see that emotion next week. Bruno said he felt it deeply. Carrie Ann said she has mixed emotions about it. There were moments she saw the progress, but use that space. Derek said he loves watching her dance, but it’s lacking fluidity.

Judges’ Scores: 33 out of 40

Robert Irwin & Witney Carson on ‘Dancing With the Stars’

They got their best score of the season last week on “Dancing With the Stars” season 34, but Witney wants to get to the top. For tonight, they are performing an Argentine Tango to “Sweet Dreams Are Made of This” by The Hampton String Quartet. They will be playing characters tonight, but he says he’s never done anything this dark before.

This was an intense one, and we definitely saw a more serious side to Robert. I think the music choice was good, and I loved the characters they were playing. I think he was born to entertain, and this did just that.

Judges’ Feedback: Bruno said they literally killed it. He liked the style, and it had the enticement and entrapment. Carrie Ann said did she believe him as the leading man? Yes, she did. He was in control of that dance. Derek said they drew everyone in right away. Cheryl said he is a natural showman. Moving forward, he wants to make love to the floor with his feet.

Judges’ Scores: 38 out of 40

Jen Affleck & Jan Ravnik

They have been improving, so now they are taking on a Taylor Swift song. They will be performing a Contemporary to “Look What You Made Me Do” by Taylor Swift. She said she is struggling to tap into the darker side of herself.

I feel she needed a contemporary piece. She definitely seemed more confident in this one. She was having fun and definitely tapped into her darker side.

Judges’ Feedback: Carrie Ann said that the beginning was off the charts, but there is a bit of inconsistency. Derek said Jan is doing a fantastic first season. He told Jen to stretch those feet. Cheryl said this is her best dance this season. Bruno said he likes her nasty side and to let the beast out.

Judges’ Scores: 32 out of 40

Alix Earle & Val Chmerkovskiy on ‘Dancing With the Stars’

She said last year, her Halloween costume took 12 hours to get into. She is going to put all that energy into this dance this year. Alix asked Val to be harder on her, and she said it may have backfired on her. For this week, they are performing a Tango to “bury a friend” by Billie Eilish.

This was an intense dance. The smoke on the dancefloor seemed to take away from the dance, but I loved this one. She is good, and all that hard work paid off this week.

Judges’ Feedback: Derek said sometimes tough love gets the job done. That was chilling and intense; that was fantastic. Cheryl said she did it all, and she really is amazing. Bruno said drop dead good. Her footwork, incredible. Carrie Ann said mad respect to her.

Judges’ Scores: 39 out of 40

Dylan Efron & Daniella Karagach

Dylan loves audiobooks, and he loves romantic/fantasy books. He wants to put that love into this week’s dance. They went a little hard this week, as Daniella accidentally broke his nose during rehearsals, which she felt terrible about. For this routine, they are doing a Viennese Waltz to “Can’t Help Falling In Love (DARK)” by Tommee Profitt and Brooke.

This song choice: FIRE. The stage, literally on fire. This was an amazing performance. It was intense and I loved it. Great performance after a rough week.

Judges’ Feedback: Cheryl said they are the most improved couple of the season. Bruno said he actually liked it, but watch the pivots. Carrie Ann said he understands the emotion of every move. Derek said he is smooth as velvet, but watch the frame.

Judges’ Scores: 35 out of 40

Dance Monster-Thon on ‘Dancing With the Stars’

Everyone is on the floor at the same time. They will be doing the hustle in their own square. The judges will tap out couples. The longer they stay on the floor, the more points they will earn. These points can definitely shift things around on the leaderboard tonight:

  • 5 Points: Whitney & Mark
  • 4 Points: Jordan & Ezra and Alix & Val
  • 3 Points: Dylan & Daniella and Robert & Witney
  • 2 Points: Jen & Jan and Danielle & Pasha
  • 1 Point: Andy & Emma

The king and queen of the Dance Monster-thon are Whitney & Mark, as the judges struggled to pick between them and Alix & Val. Time for the results next!

  1. This is a DANCE competition!!! Why are we losing excellent dancers while the consistently lowest scoring competitor stays in???? This IS NOT and shouldn’t be a popularity contest and that’s what it’s turning into. The great dancers should be able to count on their skill and hard work and dancing ability to stay in the competition.
