“Property Brothers” star Jonathan Scott shared a series of tips that helped him and fiancée Zooey Deschanel overcome their differing design styles in an effort to help others who find themselves in the same situation.
“We were very fortunate because Zooey and I have very similar tastes in the aesthetic of what we like,” Scott began in a video shared via YouTube on February 27. “The challenge I found was with us, I make decisions very quickly. She takes a lot of time to make sure that something is the right decision.”
He continued, “Well, in a renovation, if you’ve ever done one, you probably know you don’t always have the luxury of time. So, you need to figure out how you can keep things moving forward. Otherwise, your construction and design teams will start charging you more money, too.”
How Jonathan Scott and Zooey Deschanel Overcome Design Differences
According to the HGTV star, he and his fiancée have found a handful of ways to communicate through their differences.
“On the design side, the first step we always say is let’s sit back before we start talking about specifics in each room and whatnot,” Scott began in the YouTube video. “Let’s talk about the must-haves and the things that you can live without.”
The “Celebrity IOU” star gave examples of “family heirlooms or a collectible,” encouraging viewers to showcase these sentimental items.
Another tip that works for the betrothed couple is to consider which partner uses the specific space more.
“Zooey is the cook. She is amazing and runs that kitchen,” Scott gushed. “So, she should have the final say in what we do in that space because it really is her domain. If it’s my office, Zooey doesn’t really have much say nor care what I do in my office. So, I would have the final say in there.”
For common spaces, like the bedroom or living space, Scott recommends finding a common ground.
“Really think about what the win is in these situations,” he explained. “Understand that tastes can change and needs can change. So don’t feel so locked in on something that you have to have because in five years, you might have a different opinion anyway.”
