Actor Chris Evans has warned Marvel fans that his character Steve Rogers will not have an easy time when he returns in the upcoming “Avengers: Doomsday.”
While the fav-favorite MCU star was careful to avoid any type of spoiler, he did make it clear that Rogers will have something of a rough ride. The actor portrayed Captain America for around a decade until his final appearance in “Avengers: Endgame.” His return will be the first time he has taken up the iconic shield in seven years.
Speaking at Fan Expo Boston recently, Evans offered a tantalizing hint about what directors Joe and Anthony Russo have in store for the character.
Chris Evans Says The Russo Brothers Enjoy Making Captain America Suffer
When asked about his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Evans was quick to explain that his upcoming story in “Avengers: Doomsday” is brutal. He went on to say that the directors believe that Captain America’s biggest attribute is the way he always picks himself up and keeps fighting, so they have to keep finding new ways to test that.
“The Russos love beating up Steve Rogers,” Evans said of the Russo Brothers. “Their favorite thing to do is to just beat the crap out of him. To them, that’s what makes a hero, and that’s someone who gets punched so many times but still gets up. So they keep finding new ways to kick his butt. And this one was brutal.”
Evans has worked extensively with the Russo brothers over his time in the MCU. The filmmaking pair directed “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and “Captain America: Civil War” before taking up the same role for “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame.”
Throughout all of those films, Rogers is put in increasingly testing situations that challenge him both physically and emotionally, including a conflict with his longtime friend and ally Tony Stark. Ultimately, he seemed to get a happy ending at the conclusion of “Avengers: Endgame,” having fought against Thanos in a final battle.
Steve Rogers Is Now a Father
While the exact story for “Avengers: Endgame” will likely not be revealed until the release of the film on December 18, there have been some teasers that give glimpses of Steve Rogers’ life.
The first “Avengers: Doomsday” teaser showed Rogers returning home on a motorcycle, putting away his uniform, and then holding a small baby. This suggests that Rogers has since become a father in the new life he is living with Peggy Carter.
Other teasers have suggested that the antagonist Doctor Doom, who is portrayed by a returning Robert Downey Jr., may intend to use the children of prominent heroes in some fashion, with a focus on the son of Reed Richards and Sue Storm as well as Thor’s adopted daughter, Love.
He can also be seen in the main teaser trailer interacting with Thor and wielding his hammer Mjolnir.
Steve famously proved himself worthy of the weapon during the climactic battle against Thanos in “Endgame” and Thor seemingly uses the weapon to determine whether he is genuinely Captain America.
