Jesse McCartney Reveals the Scary Truth Behind His Son’s Birth

Jesse McCartney is reflecting on one of the most emotional chapters of his life — the “traumatic” journey that came with welcoming his first child, son Archer James, who was born three months premature.

The 38-year-old singer and his wife, Katie McCartney, welcomed Archer on May 7, 2025, after Katie was hospitalized for two weeks due to preterm labor complications. Jesse, who was on tour in Boston, immediately flew home to Los Angeles and slept on a blow-up mattress in her hospital room until the birth. “It meant everything to me that he didn’t leave my side,” Katie told People. “We were on the same team, and everything was for Archer.”

Born three months and one day early, baby Archer spent 70 days in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) before being discharged in July. “He soared the NICU in a way that is textbook, which is what the doctors literally said,” Jesse shared. “We hung onto that and just took it a day at a time.”

The “Beautiful Soul” singer said the experience changed his outlook on life and parenthood. “We had a moment a few days ago where we didn’t get the happy feeling you’re supposed to get, because our happiness was just grateful that he’s alive and breathing on his own,” he explained. “That shouldn’t be the experience — unfortunately, it is for so many moms.”

Bringing Archer home was a turning point for the couple. “The greatest day of my life was packing up the car with him and driving home,” Jesse said. “We just stared at him all night, without any machines around him, in his own crib.”

A Love Story Straight Out of a Rom-Com

Before becoming parents, Jesse and Katie’s relationship already sounded like something out of a movie. The two met in 2012, when Katie was bartending at a friend’s birthday party. Jesse tried to charm her by slipping his number on a cocktail napkin — but forgot to write his name. They reconnected soon after, eventually going on their first date at CUT in Beverly Hills — the same spot where Jesse proposed seven years later.

The pair tied the knot in October 2021 during a fairytale ceremony surrounded by redwoods in Carmel, California. Their first dance was to Taylor Swift’s “Lover,” a fitting choice for the couple, who have since attended several of Swift’s Eras Tour shows.

Katie, an actress and former broadcast journalism major at the University of Mississippi, has appeared in “Step Up Revolution” and “The Row”, as well as on “Victorious” and “Graceland.” She’s also starred in Jesse’s music videos for “Wasted” and “Friends.”

A New Chapter with Baby Archer

The couple announced their pregnancy on Valentine’s Day, sharing matching “Mom” and “Dad” pajamas and a sonogram photo on Instagram. But Archer made his surprise entrance three months early. “Our sweet Archie couldn’t wait to meet us,” they wrote in June, revealing his birth and NICU stay.

Since bringing him home, Jesse and Katie have shared glimpses of family life, including photos of Archer wrapped in a “Beautiful Soul”-themed blanket while attending one of his dad’s concerts. “Apparently the answer to ‘How Do You Sleep’ is at daddy’s concert,” Katie joked in her post.

Reflecting on the experience, Jesse said it only deepened his love for his wife, per People. “Getting to see her fight so hard to keep that baby in there was rough,” he said, “but I fell in love with her even more intensely. I was never more proud. This just brought us closer together.”
