Netflix has unveiled its first look at its reality competition inspired by “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” and the classic 1964 Roald Dahl book that preceded it.
One aspect of the upcoming series, however, is catching viewers by surprise — and they’ve been sharing their thoughts.
‘Wonka’s The Golden Ticket’
The first trailer for the series — which joins Netflix’s September lineup — has arrived, in which 12 lucky golden ticket winners are invited to the famed chocolate factory, each accompanied by a partner of their choosing.
The video showcases players engaging in wild challenges set within Wonka’s factory, a lavish recreation of the colorful set from the 1971 film. Also on hand is Rusty Goffe, one of the Oompa Loompas from the original film, who reprises his role in the new series.
“Once inside, delicious mischief awaits, as the players must navigate a series of Wonka’s temptations and challenges, which are designed to push them physically, mentally, and morally,” reads the Netflix synopsis.
“Veruca Salt’s ‘I want it now!’ energy may come in handy — or it may lead to disastrous consequences,” the synopsis continues. “Players will journey through the factory’s wondrous and unpredictable landscape, while proving they have the instincts, resilience, and character to thrive in chaos. And, yes, they might even bump into an Oompa Loompa or two. “
Meanwhile, the trailer introduces new narration from Gene Wilder, iconic star of “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.” Since Wilder passed away a decade ago, that narration is generated by AI.
Huge Excitement From the Trailer
In comments made via Instagram after the trailer’s debut, the consensus from fans seems to be that they love the first look at the show, particularly its epic scale and gargantuan sets.
“This looks incredible,” read one comment, while another was “so excited for this!”
“The budget for these builds must have been INSANE,” a comment observed about the high-end production values and over-the-top set.
Another simply wrote, “Thank you Netflix! Thank you!”
The AI Voice Is Dividing Fans
GettyHowever, not everyone was sold on Wilder’s AI-recreated narration.
“It’s a rather unsettling choice, and might strike some as a bit tasteless, if not outright creepy,” noted The Hollywood Reporter.
There were some on social media who felt similarly.
“Had me til AI voice,” noted one Instagram commenter.
“AI Gene Wilder’s voice is disrespectful,” reads another, while a different commenter found the use of the AI voice to be “insulting.”
Meanwhile, others felt the AI hadn’t quite captured Wilder, observing that it seemed more reminiscent of Johnny Depp’s performance as Willy Wonka than Wilder’s
Wilder’s Family Approves
NetflixOf course, in order to recreate Wilder’s voice, Netflix obtained permission from the late actor’s widow, Karen B. Wilder.
“More than five decades after Gene brought Willy Wonka to life, people of all ages and backgrounds around the world continue to find joy, laughter and inspiration in his performance,” she said in a statement.
“Gene had a remarkable ability to bring humor, wonder and heart into people’s lives, and that connection has endured for generations,” Wilder’s statement continued. “We are delighted that ‘Wonka’s The Golden Ticket’ celebrates the warmth and imagination that he brought to the role, introducing that magic to a new generation while honoring the fans who have cherished it for decades.”
Viewers can form their own opinions when “Wonka’s The Golden Ticket” debuts September 23 on Netflix.
