The hit comedy series “The Inbetweeners” is making a comeback, with Netflix revealing the return of the British sitcom. The show, which originally ran from 2008 until 2011, has become a modern classic, with two additional feature films. Widely regarded as one of the last great sitcoms to come out of the county, it will return to the big screen for a third movie instalment.
The news means that the four main cast will reunite on screen for the first time in more than a decade. The last time they were seen together as their characters was in the 2014 film “The Inbetweeners 2.” Netflix has now confirmed Simon Bird, James Buckley, Blake Harrison, and Joe Thomas will all reprise their roles.
There’s currently no release date for the film or information about who else will appear. However, the news confirms long-running rumors about a reunion, this time as an exclusive for the streaming service Netflix.
‘The Inbetweeners’ Cast Reunites in New Teaser
Fans and journalists have been speculating for months that “The Inbetweeners” could be returning. Rumors have persisted for some time, although the speculation increased over the last few months.
Those reports were seemingly on the money, with Netflix now officially confirming that a third film is in development. During the announcement, the streamer confirmed that the four original cast members will return to portray Will, Simon, Neil, and Jay.
In the social media post revealing the new film, a brief teaser was also shown. This included the characters entering a storage unit and climbing into their old yellow Fiat car. After struggling to start the engine, the four then drive away.
Fans of the sitcom will also be reassured that both Damon Beesley and Iain Morris are writing and directing the film. The pair created the sitcom and wrote the show and its subsequent movie sequels. They said that it had been “super fun” to spend time with their old colleagues. “We’re going to work hard every week to ensure there are no problemos making this new film for humans,” Beesley and Morris added in the statement.
Will Emily Atack & Other Stars Return?
Netflix only announced the return of the main four cast members alongside Beesley and Morris. Yet, the original films and sitcom also featured a number of high-profile performers who could return.
This includes familiar faces such as Emily Atack and Emily Head. The pair played love interests for some of the group throughout the show. Atack is probably best known for her work in the Disney+ series “Rivals,” while Head is the daughter of Anthony Head and has had roles in a number of British series.
Other memorable supporting characters featured in the series include Greg Davies’ terrifying head of sixth form Mr. Gilbert and Belinda Stewart-Wilson as Will’s mother. Netflix has yet to announce whether any of them will join the reunion, and no details about new characters have been revealed.
The sitcom followed the life of four teenagers at a sixth form college, charting their trials and tribulations as they straddled the line between childhood and adulthood. Airing on E4 in the UK, it attracted record ratings and won critical acclaim. The two films also became box office successes, breaking records for British comedies.
