Carson Daly took on a different role at “Today” this week, stepping into the program’s lead anchor seat while Craig Melvin and Savannah Guthrie were both away from the morning show.
According to The U.S. Sun, Daly co-hosted Tuesday’s 7 a.m. broadcast alongside NBC News’ Kristen Welker, who has been filling in for Guthrie. The appearance marked a notable change for Daly, who more often handles entertainment segments and supporting anchor duties on the long-running NBC program.
Daly acknowledged the lineup change at the beginning of the broadcast, telling viewers that Guthrie and Melvin had the “morning off.”

The U.S. Sun characterized the move as an apparent promotion because Daly helped open the flagship 7 a.m. hour in Melvin’s usual seat rather than simply contributing one of his regular segments.
Welker, meanwhile, stepped in for Guthrie while the longtime anchor took time away from the desk.
Melvin’s exact plans during his absence were not publicly detailed. However, he recently shared an Instagram post reflecting on his summer with wife Lindsay Czarniak and their children before the beginning of the new school year.

His “Today” fill-in also comes during a period of transition in another part of his NBC career.
