Cristiano Ronaldo is beginning to imagine what his life could look like after more than two decades as a professional soccer player.
The 41-year-old athlete recently hinted that retirement may be approaching as he discussed the legacy he wants to leave and the activities that will keep him busy once he steps away from the field.
Cristiano shared the update in an interview with Vogue published August 16. “This is probably my last year of football, and I want to leave a spectacular legacy,” he said.
Cristiano currently plays for Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr, which he joined in 2023. His contract is reportedly scheduled to expire in June 2027.
The athlete did not provide a specific retirement date or confirm whether he intends to play through the end of his contract. However, his comments suggest that he is preparing for the final chapter of his professional career.
He Understands Retirement Could Leave a Void
Cristiano has spent approximately 25 years following the demanding schedule required of an elite athlete.
He acknowledged that leaving the sport could create a major absence in his daily routine and said he does not intend to replace soccer with only one activity.
“Because football could leave a big hole, you have to fill your time in various ways, not just one,” he explained.
Cristiano said he already has his future “all mapped out,” although he finds it difficult to identify only one goal or interest he intends to pursue.
“I have so many things to keep me busy, that to tell you just one thing is hard,” he added.
Travel and Padel Are Part of His Plans
After years of training, matches, and international travel dictated by his career, Cristiano wants more freedom.
He said his retirement plans include having more fun and traveling for pleasure. The soccer star also wants to spend time watching and playing padel, a racket sport that has become one of his favorite hobbies.
Cristiano is looking forward to enjoying the results of the work he and his family have put into building their life.
“After all, it’s been 25 years with a lot of sacrifice,” he said.
More Time With His Family
Spending additional time with his family is also an important part of Cristiano’s plans.
The interview took place shortly before he married his longtime partner, Georgina Rodríguez, in an intimate ceremony. The couple began dating in 2016 and announced their engagement in 2025.
Cristiano and Georgina share daughters Alana and Bella. The athlete is also the father of son Cristiano Jr. and twins Eva and Mateo. The newlyweds have not ruled out expanding their family in the future.
“I never say never,” Cristiano said when asked whether they might have another child.
