Kaia Gerber understands the opportunities and added scrutiny that can come with having famous parents.
The model and actress recently revealed the candid advice she gave “The Shards” costar Homer Gere as he prepared to enter Hollywood with a name audiences already recognize.
Kaia, the daughter of supermodel Cindy Crawford and businessman Rande Gerber, has worked in the entertainment and fashion industries since she was a teenager.
In an interview with Vogue published August 11, Kaia acknowledged that being born into a famous family has benefited her career.
“I’ve only ever been a nepo baby, and I’ve only ever benefited in my career from it,” she said.
However, Kaia admitted that she sometimes evaluates other performers from prominent families with the same skepticism they might encounter from audiences.
She recalled thinking, “Okay, show me why you deserve this job.”
The conversation surrounding nepotism has ultimately encouraged Kaia to work harder and demonstrate why she deserves the opportunities she receives.
Her Advice for Homer Gere
Homer, the son of “Pretty Woman” star Richard Gere and actress Carey Lowell, stars opposite Kaia in Ryan Murphy’s “The Shards.”
Unlike Kaia, Homer reached adulthood without regularly being viewed through the lens of his father’s Hollywood career. Kaia understood that appearing in a major television series would likely change that.
“I said to Homer, because the concept is daunting to him, having lived as an adult so far without that perception, whereas I sort of went through it when I wasn’t fully sentient,” she explained.
Kaia warned Homer that viewers would not necessarily evaluate him in the same way they would an entirely unknown actor. His family name and his resemblance to Richard would inevitably become part of the conversation.
The two actors appeared together on the September 2026 cover of Vogue while promoting their new series.
A Surprising Connection Between Their Parents
Kaia and Homer share an unusual connection beyond being the children of celebrities.
Kaia’s mother, Cindy, was married to Homer’s father, Richard, from 1991 until 1995. That history quickly inspired comparisons between the young costars and their famous parents during promotional appearances for “The Shards.”
Homer revealed that he addressed the potentially awkward connection soon after meeting Kaia.
“Twenty minutes into knowing each other, I was like, ‘Should we just acknowledge the fact that our parents were married?’” he recalled. According to Homer, Kaia simply responded, “Yeah. Cool.”
“And that was it,” he added.
Kaia Gerber and Homer Gere Star in ‘The Shards’
“The Shards” is based on Bret Easton Ellis’ 2023 novel of the same name. Set in 1981 Los Angeles, the series follows a fictionalized teenage version of the author during his final year at an elite preparatory school.
Homer plays Ellis, while Kaia portrays Debbie Schaffer. The story combines coming-of-age drama with mystery as the characters become increasingly concerned about a possible serial killer.
For Kaia and Homer, the project also places their famous family histories under a new spotlight. Kaia’s advice suggests that she believes privilege can create opportunities, but talent and hard work are still required to maintain them.
