“Only Murders in the Building” star Martin Short thinks of costar Selena Gomez as one of his daughters. So it’s only natural that he’s had at least one embarrassing dad moment.
Martin Short Commits Embarrassing Wedding Faux Pas
During the Wednesday, January 21, episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”, Short revealed he committed one of the most cringey wedding faux pas possible at Selena’s wedding to Benny Blanco.
“First of all, it is such a great thing to go to a wedding where you just know that these people are perfect for each other,” he gushed. “Selena is like an extra child of mine. I adore her so much. And she found this guy, and he’s the greatest guy. And they are wildly in love.”
He went on to say that the Santa Barbara wedding was “perfect” and “beautiful.
“Everything was perfect. Except, the night of the reception, it was a big, big party. You know, a stage, a dance floor, and musicians. And big, big tents,” Short continued. “And at the back of these tents, were these individually seating areas with couches and chairs. So if you had a group—like we had a group form ‘Only Murders in the Building,’ there was about 12 of us. And there was a cake, a wedding cake, by our section.”
According to the comedian, the cake was unsuspected due to its size. He figured it was safe to assume that each seating area had its own individual cake.
“They haven’t cut their wedding cake yet, but after a few hours Steve [Martin] said he was going to leave. I said, ‘Oh Steve, you can’t leave yet without a piece of wedding cake,'” he recalled in horror.
Yes…Martin Short took a fork to Selena Gomez’s wedding cake.
The “Father of the Bride” actor said the whole group screamed at him. He, of course, tried to fix it, to no avail. The big guns were called in, i.e. the wedding coordinator and the chef.
“It ended up being like a Hollywood wedding cake in that it was beautiful, but now it had a little work done,” he joked.
Selena Gomez Laughed It Off
Ever gracious, the former Disney star was not going to let a little cake cutting ruin her big day.
The “Only Murders” crew decided not to tell Gomez “for a month.” Somehow word got around, as the “Wizards of Waverly Place” alum spotted Short and shouted, “Hey Marty, I heard you tried to eat my cake!”
Hilariously enough, in photos from her big day, which Gomez shared via Instagram on September 30, 2025, the damaged dessert is easily visible (in slide 12).
