Meryl Streep and Martin Short are once again fueling speculation about their close relationship after being spotted spending time together in London.
The longtime friends and “Only Murders in the Building” co-stars recently enjoyed a meal together, with a fan photo shared to X on Sunday, May 17, capturing the pair seated closely inside a restaurant.
What We Know About the Outing
In the image, Streep and Short appeared focused on a phone screen while sitting side by side, with Streep resting her shoulder against Short’s chest.
The fan who posted the photo appeared unaware of the ongoing speculation surrounding the pair and mistakenly identified Short as Streep’s husband in the caption.
“Spending a few days in London, choosing a restaurant at random and ending up eating just a few meters from Meryl Streep and her husband,” the social media user wrote.
However, Streep is currently single following her split from husband Don Gummer, which was publicly revealed in 2023.
Short, meanwhile, has remained a widower since the death of his wife, Nancy Dolman, in 2010.
The sighting comes as reports suggest “Only Murders in the Building” is filming its sixth season in London, marking the first time the hit series has filmed outside the United States.
Fellow cast member Steve Martin has also been documenting his time overseas, recently sharing Instagram photos from locations including Trafalgar Square and local gift shops.
Streep and Short first sparked dating rumors in January 2024 after attending the Golden Globes together.
At the time, a representative denied reports that the actors had become romantically involved, stating that the two were simply close friends.
“They are just very good friends, nothing more,” a statement obtained by People said at the time.
Still, interest in their relationship has continued.
Short Has Previously Spoken About Streep
Short has spoken warmly about Streep in interviews, often praising her personality and work ethic.
In one conversation with Entertainment Tonight in 2025, he described the Oscar-winning actress as refreshingly down-to-earth despite her legendary status in Hollywood.
“I think just how easy she is, how loose she is,” Short said while discussing Streep. “She doesn’t carry any of her 21 Oscar nominations to the set.”
He added that despite her accomplishments, Streep remains “so polite and fun and generous.”
Fellow co-stars Selena Gomez and Steve Martin have also publicly praised Streep, with Gomez previously calling her “the best person.”
Meanwhile, comedian Amy Schumer added fuel to the rumors earlier this year after suggesting she believed Short might no longer be single following Saturday Night Live’s 50th anniversary celebrations.
“I think that the tea is, I think Marty might be off the market,” Schumer said in February 2025, per People. “That’s what I’m seeing.”
A source for In Touch revealed back in April of this year that the two do not refer to each other as boyfriend and girlfriend.
“Meryl and Martin have a complex dynamic because they do not refer to each other as ‘boyfriend’ and ‘girlfriend’ per se,” the source said. “They have an incredibly close, intense relationship and will probably spend the rest of their lives together in some way or another.”
Despite ongoing speculation, neither Streep nor Short has publicly confirmed a romantic relationship.
Still, their latest London outing has fans once again wondering whether the longtime friends may be something more as they continue working together abroad.
