Medical Staff Tried to Warn Beloved Rob Reiner About Their Son with Specific Advice Before Family Tragedy: REPORT

Hollywood is still reeling from the deaths of director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, a loss that stunned the industry and those who knew them personally. TMZ broke the news that Rob, 78, and Michele, 70, were found stabbed to death inside their Brentwood home on the afternoon of December 14. Authorities said the attack took place at the residence.

The couple’s 28-year-old daughter, Romy, discovered her father’s body in the primary bedroom. Their son, Nick, was arrested later that evening. Prosecutors charged him with two counts of first-degree murder.

The complaint includes special circumstances allegations of multiple murders and the use of a knife. As the legal proceedings begin for Nick, a report in US Weekly details the weeks that led upto the double-tragedy at the Reiner home.

As court proceedings continue, Nick’s mental health remains at the center of the case. People close to the family say concerns about his stability had escalated in the weeks before Rob and Michele were killed.

A second source told Us Weekly that the screenwriter, who has been widely reported to suffer from schizophrenia and has spoken openly about past drug addiction, had recently fired his psychiatrist and changed his medications—those adjustments, the source said, worried medical professionals.

“The medical staff warned Rob and Michele not to let Nick live at home until he got his medication straightened out,” the source told US Weekly.

Nick had been staying in the guest house on the family’s property. The night before the killings, he allegedly got into an argument with his parents at Conan O’Brien’s holiday party.

Medication Changes Raise Red Flags

In the weeks before the tragedy, Rob and Michele were focused on getting Nick’s treatment back on track. They were searching for stability, hoping a new plan would help.

But a source said the medications had stopped helping because “they weren’t working anymore.”

Doctors expressed concern about the recent changes. Adjusting prescriptions can be delicate, and medical staff reportedly feared the impact could be serious.

According to the source, they had “warned Rob and Michele not to allow Nick to stay at their home due to the meds being switched, and [said] that it could make him exhibit even more erratic behavior.”

A January profile in The Washington Post added further insight into the family dynamic. The outlet reported that “as much as he resisted his parents’ interventions,” Nick often found his way back home because he had “become accustomed to the trappings of his privileged upbringing.”

Years of Treatment & Relapse Cycles

Nick and Rob had both spoken openly in the past about Nick’s battle with addiction. Those close to the family understood that the challenges had stretched on for years and often weighed heavily on everyone involved.

In mid-January, The New York Times reported that Nick had been placed under a mental health conservatorship from 2020 to 2021, highlighting the seriousness of his struggles.

Even so, Rob and Michele continued to stand by their son. “Michele and Rob did everything a parent could possibly do to help Nick,” a source told Us Weekly in December.

“It became a cycle of seeking treatment for him, kicking him out, and him moving back in. This went on for years.”

The strain was not limited to Rob and Michele. According to the source, Romy was deeply impacted by Nick’s “hostile and volatile” behavior. It’s been so much of their life. She’s been so traumatized.

Rob was widely celebrated for directing the romantic comedy classic “When Harry Met Sally.” He and Michele, a photographer and producer, had been married for 36 years.

In addition to Romy, they shared a son, Jake, 34. Rob was also father to Tracy, 61, the daughter of his former wife, Penny Marshall, whom he later adopted.

Their son Nick remains in custody without bail at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles. He is scheduled to return to court on April 29 as the case moves forward.
