Phoebe Bridgers is back with a much-anticipated new third album, “Lost Weekend.”
On the record she addresses her high-profile split from “actor “Hamnet” actor Paul Mescal and her subsequent relationship with comedian Bo Burnham.
The musician has become as known for her messy personal life as her music. The Boygenius singer’s latest record dissects her love life, her mental health, and the 2022 death of her father.
Phoebe Bridgers Lifts Lid On 2022 Split From Paul Mescal
Phoebe Bridgers appears to reference her relationship with ex Paul Mescal on her latest album “Lost Weekend.”
The pair were first linked in 2020 after public flirting on social media. Later that year, he appeared in a music video for Bridgers’ song “Savior Complex.”
The couple then made their first public appearance together in November 2021 at the LACMA Gala, before going Instagram official. They split in 2022 amid rumors she had cheated on the “Aftersun” actor with comedian Bo Burnham.
Mescal is currently dating Gracie Abrams, to whom he’s been linked since 2024. Fans have speculated that Phoebe shaded the 26-year-old singer on her song “The Govenors Waltz.”
An early review in The Guardian of her first solo project in over six years reveals that the singer-songwriter penned lyrics that could be seen as a dig at Abrams.
“Now, let’s see how far I can run without stopping / And she can pretend to be me / Since she took my place in my bed on that stage / I have not lost any sleep / Being myself wasn’t easy / Do it for me,” she sings. Abrams famously incorporated space-themed bed sheets into her show, sheets Bridgers owned and frequently showed on social media.
Since the track has been released in full, fans don’t believe it is disparaging towards the “Thats So True” singer.
“Phoebe Bridgers wins Grammy for coming up with most beautiful elegant way to call Paul Mescal a bum,” wrote one.
Another added, “I listened to this song, but far from Phoebe Bridgers putting down Gracie Abrams, it felt like she was actually expressing gratitude toward her,” someone wrote on social media.
Elsewhere, She Confirmed Their Engagement
In the title track “Lost Weekend,” Bridgers confirms that she was engaged to Mescal.
“I’m supposed to be married, but I called it off,” she sings.
Rumors ran rife in 2022 that the duo was engaged after The Guardian hinted at the news in November. Neither confirmed the engagement at the time. In December 2022, Deux Moi claimed they had called off the engagement.
After their split, Mescal spoke out in 2023 about the relationship becoming “Twitter fodder.”
“I definitely feel the temptation to say the status of my whatever — that will always be there,” he told Vanity Fair at the time, adding that he was hoping to keep his personal life “private … moving forward,” hoping to “drown … out” speculation.
“A lot of the time people are kind about their support for me,” the Oscar-nominated actor told the outlet. “That’s my predominant experience.”
Phoebe Bridgers Reveals Romance To Bo Burnham
Despite keeping a low profile, Phoebe Bridgers has opened up on “Lost Weekend” about her romance with comedian Bo Burnham.
Multiple tracks on the record are addressed to “Bobby” which many believe to be Burnham (whose real name is Robert). Burnham himself even sings on and co-wrote several of those songs.
She describes how they met at a costume party in “Kill Me,” and she frequently speaks about how their romance restored her will to live. The track “Bobby” is one of her most romantic, where she sings, “Now I don’t know if I can make it tonight / But what are you doing the rest of my life?”
In “Liberty Tree,” she sings about how she feels safe to be goofy with Burnham, who saved her in an era when she was flying too close to the sun.
