Beloved Celebrity Chef, 86, Makes Vulnerable Confession About End-of-Life After Stepping Back From Iconic Show

After nearly a decade on one of television’s most beloved shows, Prue Leith is choosing to slow down and reflect on what comes next. The former “The Great British Bake Off” judge, 86, recently opened up about her decision to step away, explaining that it felt like the right moment to turn her attention elsewhere. When announcing her departure earlier this year, she said, “Now feels like the right time to step back,” adding, “There’s so much I’d like to do.”

As she considers what lies ahead, the reality TV legend has spoken with quiet honesty about how age is shaping her decisions today.

In an interview with Hello! Magazine, she reflected on the passage of time and the way it now informs her creative choices, “I know I’m going to die and presumably quite soon. I think about death in the sense of, ‘Is it worth starting another novel? Will I finish it?”

While writing continues to mean a great deal to her, she acknowledged that starting a new long-term project now comes with a different sense of uncertainty, one she approaches with both realism and care.

Choosing Travel and Joy Over Long-Term Plans

Even with those thoughts in mind, Leith is choosing to focus on what still brings her happiness.

She said she hopes to spend more time traveling with her husband, John Playfair, returning to places they’ve loved and seeing new ones together.

“There are lots of the ‘stans’ that we haven’t been to,” she said. “We’ve been to Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, but I want to go back.”

That sense of enjoyment still guides her. Earlier this year, she took to the runway at London Fashion Week, embracing the moment in her own way.

“I will do it for as long as I can because I enjoy it,” she said. “It suits my show-off nature.”

Balancing Joy With the Realities of Aging

Leith has also spoken candidly about the realities of aging, sharing how it shapes her day-to-day life.

During an appearance on “Loose Women,” she reflected on the physical changes that come with getting older and how they affect her routine.

“Well, I think old age stinks,” she revealed, as per The Daily Mail. “It takes me 10 minutes to get myself out of bed in the morning. If I don’t do the exercises, I can’t move. There are all sorts of things that are wrong with old age.”

“You know, you are very conscious that this is nearly the end, though I agree that you then decide that you’re going to make the most of it and have fun,” she continued.

At the same time, she shared that this stage of life has also brought a new sense of freedom, allowing her to embrace experiences she might once have hesitated to try.

As per The Daily Mail, she added: “If I was about to get a job on Bake Off I probably wouldn’t walk down a catwalk in Latex with goth makeup on, but now it’s too late.”

“If I want to do it and it sounds like good fun I just think, why not?,” she added to Heat Magazine.

Rather than stepping back, she is choosing to meet this stage of life with intention, focusing on what brings her joy and making the most of the time she has.
