Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos Admit Their Engagement Was Pure Romance
The couple discussed their engagement in the opening moments of their daytime talk series, “Live With Kelly and Mark.” They shared how happy they were that their engagement came before the the popularity of social media.
PEOPLE shared the couple’s comments about the day that changed both their lives. However, Ripa believes the romance is taken out of today’s proposals.
“People don’t just propose anymore. They propose for social media,” she explained.
Consuelos said sweetly, “I remember our proposal.” Ripa alluded that perhaps Consuelos was confused.
“Well, I mean, was it a proposal? It was more of an idea. You were like, ‘We have the day off from work tomorrow. Should we get married tomorrow?'” she recalled of the day he asked her to marry him while they were both working on the daytime soap opera, “All My Children.”
“And you said, ‘Ask me when you’re serious.’ And I said, ‘I’m dead serious.'” the actor added.
Almost 30 years later, Consuelos adds that he, for one, is “so glad we didn’t have Instagram and that stuff back then.” He called carefully curated social media proposals “so annoying.”
Did Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos Have a Big Wedding?
In 2022, Kelly Ripa discussed the secret details of her wedding to Mark Consuelos with her then co-host Ryan Seacrest.
“We just had a very normal, very regular wedding,” she revealed. “[Eloping] really is such an efficient way to get married. And it was fun.”
Ripa believes that if the couple “had to endure a large wedding, the planning and the seating charts and the venue, we would not have made it. I don’t think we would have made it to the wedding.”
She continued, “There would have been bad feelings and blame all over the place. And I can honestly say, we do not feel less married. As a matter of fact, we feel more married than those people, because we’re still married.”
“Two consecutive days off from work, both on the same day. And it was like, ‘Let’s go to Vegas and get married and it’ll be fun.”
“It was ’96, guys, remember the winter of ’96? The winter of ’96 is in the record books as the most miserable. It was an endless winter, and it was a snowstorm when we left. And we looked at the weather because we thought about going to City Hall, but that was still cold and miserable, whereas Las Vegas was 85 degrees and sunny. ‘Let’s do that!’ And so that’s what we did.”
Ripa concluded that her wedding cost, “$179 including airfare, cause we had miles and we had a canceled trip or something. But $179 in total with everything.”
