Longtime “The Voice” host Carson Daly opened up about the realities of parenting a teenager.
The former MTV star filled in for Sheinelle Jones during a recent episode of “Today With Jenna and Sheinelle,” where he shared a story that many parents of teenagers can relate to.
Carson Daly Talks Parenting a Teen
Daly shares three children with wife Siri Pinter: 17-year-old son Jackson, 13-year-old daughter Etta, 11-year-old London, and 6-year-old daughter Goldie. It’s his eldest daughter, however, that seems to be giving him a run for his money.
“I have a 13-year-old, Etta, who is doing great, who I never speak with,” he said during the Monday, May 18, episode. “Do you speak 13-year-old? Cause I don’t.”
Jenna Bush Hager — who is also the mother of a 13-year-old girl — found Daly’s remarks relatable.
“I try to speak 13-year-old,” she said.
When Daly shared a photo of his daughter during her recent confirmation into the Catholic church, Bush Hager shared that her daughter, Mila, recently celebrated the same milestone.
“It’s weird that they can get confirmed and they are adults in the church mind, but yet…” she continued.
Daly went on to explain how his preferred method of communication with his daughter is Snapchat.
“You ever hear that phrase, ‘You’ve got to meet kids where they are?’ You hear it in business a lot, right? They want to advertise, get in front of them,” he said. “I’ve taken a page out of that, and six months ago, I did join Snapchat. I have literally communicated with my daughter, in particular, more via Snapchat than I have in real life.”
“As silly as it is, I am connected a little bit,” Daly added.
Unlike his relationship with his daughter, Daly joked that he’s hoping to move in with his son as he heads off to college.
“Do you think you’re going to be one of those parents that, when your kid goes off—when your baby goes off to college, you have sort of like a weeping moment?” Bush Hager asked her fill-in co-host.
“I’m looking for real estate around the university,” he laughed. “I’m like, ‘Buddy, we’re going to get a sick apartment here. I’m gonna hang out, it’s going to be great. In my mind, I’m going with him to college. The reality hasn’t hit yet, that I’m not.”
Carson Daly’s Work-Life Balance
In 2017, the father of four stepped down from one of his jobs in order to spend more time with his children.
“Today is my very last day at Amp Radio,” he shared via Instagram that July. “The truth is…The reason I’m going to stop doing radio for now is that I just want to have breakfast with my kids…I want to thank you guys. It’s been really incredible.”
Despite his decision being made with his family in mind, Daly called it “bittersweet.”
“Bittersweet morning,” he captioned the post. “So lucky to have been on radio in my hometown for almost 8 yrs. I’ve decided waking up w my family is what’s most important right now. Thanks for listening!”
