While “House of the Dragon” Season 3 has just finished airing, all eyes are on another “Game of Thrones” prequel. No, it’s not “Aegon’s Conquest.” Instead, it’s all about the HBO series “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.”
The story about Dunk and Egg is slated for a 2027 release window, but fans will remember that the first season was delayed to 2026 due to production schedules. So, all eyes are on whether a 2027 release is even possible. With the latest filming announcement, it certainly is!
‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Season 2 Has Likely Finished Filming
Warner Bros. DiscoveryEarlier this month, Dexter Sol Ansell, who plays Aegon “Egg” Targaryen, announced that he had finished filming his scenes for the second season. However, as it was just an audio of his wrap call, it meant that filming was still going on and he couldn’t and didn’t want to share spoilers.
Now, Peter Claffey, who plays Ser Duncan “Dunk” the Tall, shared his wrap gift on his Instagram Story. He has officially finished filming, which likely means that the entire production has wrapped.
“A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” has a much tighter story than “House of the Dragon” and “Game of Thrones.” It’s only told from Dunk and Egg’s perspectives, and that means at least one of them is in each of the scenes. So, if Ansell has already filmed and Claffey has just finished, it suggests that filming is complete. That is, unless the show takes a slightly different approach during the second season, considering there’s likely a need to see how the Targaryens are handling Aegon running off again.
“A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” Season 2 will adapt the second of George R.R. Martin’s Dunk and Egg novellas, “The Sworn Sword.” This is set around a year and a half after the first novel, which the first season adapted, and follows Dunk trying to deal with two minor nobles fighting over the same piece of land after a drought has devastated the Reach.
Filming wasn’t easy, as the one spot the team chose to film the drought scenes was struck with historic levels of rainfall, which meant production had to move locations. It meant that filming continued past the intended wrap month of June 2026.
‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Is On Track for a 2027 Release Window
Warner Bros. DiscoveryEven if there is a little more filming to complete, it still means that the “Game of Thrones” prequel series is on track for a 2027 release window. The initial plan was for it to air sometime within the first half of 2027 on HBO, and even that is still possible despite the filming issues.
While “House of the Dragon” can take almost a year in post-production, the tale about “The Hedge Knight” doesn’t have that issue. There are no dragons to CGI into the story, with the only dragon included in the tale being a prop used by a traveling performance group. With fewer graphics needed, it allows for a shorter post-production timeframe, allowing for the show to air sometime within the next 10 months.
This puts HBO back on track for releasing one “Game of Thrones” series per year. “House of the Dragon” Season 4 will start filming in 2027 with an intended 2028 release window. After that, it will be interesting to see if other “Game of Thrones” stories will be told, as the fourth season of the Targaryen civil war is set to be the last. Of course, there is the aftermath of the civil war, between Rhaenyra’s current reign and Dunk hoping to prove his worth to Prince Baelor.
