Jennifer Grey Reponds After Co-Star’s Cryptic Post: ‘I’m Getting Calls From People Who Think I Died’

Ever since the rise of the internet, celebrity death hoaxes have been prevalent, forcing stars to come forward to assure fans they were not as deceased as fans were led to believee.

Back in 2011, for example, rocker Jon Bon Jovi took to social media to share a photo of himself along with the date to refute an online rumor that he’d had a fatal heart attack.

Now, “Dirty Dancing” star Jennifer Grey has had to do the same thing — not because of an online death hoax, however, but due to a cryptic social media tribute from a former co-star that was widely misinterpreted.

An Irish Blessing

On Friday, August 14, actor Matthew Modine took to Instagram to share a photo of himself and Grey in a scene from their 1992 movie “Wind.”

In the film, their characters fall in love in the midst of competing in the America’s Cup yacht races, which prompted Modine to quote an iconic Irish blessing in his caption..

“May the road rise up to meet you,” reads Modine’s quote. “May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, the rains fall soft upon your fields, and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand.”

He added the word “Sailing,” and tagged Grey’s Instagram account.

Fans Were Shocked

After reading Modine’s quote, fans responded with comments questioning whether Grey had passed away.

“You had me running to check the internet if she was OK!” read one comment, while another read, “Good lord, I thought she’d died. 🤦‍♀️” Another comment noted that Modine “scared a lot of us.”

“Scared the crap out of me!” another comment declared, while another added, “don’t scare me like that! You gave me a flipping heart attack in the middle of making dinner.” One commenter summed it up by writing, “Jeez, Matthew, I thought she’d died!”

Modine issued a comment in response. However, if his intent was to calm fans’ fears that Grey had perished, it definitely did not have the intended effect.

“Symbolism,” Modine wrote. “The wind symbolizes support and guidance, suggesting that one will have help along their path. This blessing is part of a larger prayer that includes other elements of nature, emphasizing a deep connection to the environment.

He concluded by writing, “Not sure why people think this is about death. Think that’s more about you than the poem! 😍Death is a consequence of life. Don’t worry about it. 😂”

‘What Are You Doing Here?!’

The speculation that Grey was no longer among the living eventually reached her, prompting her to tag Modine with a comment.

“Yo! @matthewmodine what are you doing here?!” Grey wrote.

“I’m getting calls from people who think I died,” she addded. “What is the meaning of this post? Do you think I died?”

Baby’s Back in ‘Dirty Dancing’ Sequel

Now that she’s confirmed being very much alive, Grey’s next order of business is reprising her most beloved role: Franches “Baby” Houseman in “Dirty Dancing.”

In January 2026, news emerged confirming a sequel was in the works, with Grey set to star.

“The role of Baby has held a very deep and meaningful place in my heart, as it has in the hearts of so many fans over the years,” she said in a statement to Entertainment Weekly. “I’m excited to say that it looks like the wait will soon be over.”
