A former “American Idol” judge looked back at her film career and admits that one movie role still “haunts” her to this day. Why? Because the role went on to receive a coveted Oscar nomination.
On October 15, Jennifer Lopez spoke at length on Howard Stern’s SiriusXM show, sharing how turning down the role ended up being one of her biggest mistakes. However, she may still have a chance to redeem herself with her role in “Kiss of the Spider Woman” getting Oscar buzz.
Jennifer Lopez Turned Down an Oscar-Worthy Role
GettyJennifer Lopez stopped by Howard Stern’s SiriusXM show on Oct. 15, where she shared one of her biggest regrets as a movie star. In early 2000, Lopez was given the chance to star in Adrian Lyne’s 2002 seductive thriller “Unfaithful.” However, she admitted she turned down the role in the film because “The script wasn’t good,” although Lyne “made it great.”
“Unfaithful” follows a married woman caught in a passionate affair, but as her husband grows suspicious of his wife, it leads to tragic consequences. Prominent actors Diane Lane and Richard Gere would star as the married couple, with Olivier Martinez portraying her lover.
Lane’s performance in the film earned her an Oscar nomination for best actress. When Stern asked Lopez, “Is that hard to live with?” She replied, “It’s funny. It haunts me. It haunts me a little bit. It’s like the one that I turned down that it was just like, ‘Why did you turn down working with Adrian Lyne? What were you thinking?’ I didn’t even know what the hell was going on in my mind at the time. Who knows what was going on with me at the time.”
Could winning an Oscar for best actress have changed the trajectory of Lopez’s career?
Lopez Gets Support From Her Ex-Husband for ‘Kiss of a Spider Woman’
GettyLopez sparked Oscar-worthy buzz for her performance in her first-ever movie musical, “Kiss of a Spider Woman.” In fact, her ex-husband, Ben Affleck, is an executive producer on the film.
Despite the couple going their separate ways in August 2024, Affleck made a surprise appearance at Lopez’s New York City movie premiere in October.
At the premiere, the former couple posed for photos and even chatted amongst one another, proving that they are still on good terms. In fact, Affleck praised his ex-wife and her performance in the musical. “Jennifer, in a role that she was born to play, she is amazing in the movie,” he told Extra.
“She worked enormously hard. You get to see like all of her many gifts, she’s somebody that grew up watching, you know, classic musicals …. she does it all. She’s fabulous,” he added.
Here’s hoping Lopez scores an Oscar nomination for her role.
