Mindy Kaling has built an impressive career as an actress, comedian, screenwriter and producer, but motherhood remains one of her most meaningful roles.
The “Office” alum is the mother of three children: Katherine, Spencer and Anne. Although Mindy occasionally shares stories and photographs from their lives, she avoids showing their faces and has never publicly identified their father.

Katherine ‘Kit’ Swati Kaling
Mindy welcomed her first child, Katherine “Kit” Kaling, on December 15, 2017.
The actress selected a name inspired by classic Hollywood star Katharine Hepburn. Mindy later continued the theme when she named her son after actor Spencer Tracy.
Kit has developed an adventurous personality that differs from her mother’s childhood temperament. Mindy has described her eldest daughter as chatty and interested in order and structure.
For Kit’s eighth birthday in December 2025, Mindy celebrated her love of roller coasters, thrilling books, bodyboarding, rafting and jet skis.
“I am the least adventurous person alive, so God clearly has a sense of humor pairing us up,” Mindy joked on Instagram.
Mindy has also explained how her late mother, Dr. Swati Chokalingam, influenced her approach to parenting. She hopes to offer her children the same unconditional support and open-mindedness her mother gave her.
Spencer Avu Kaling
Mindy welcomed her second child, Spencer, in September 2020. She surprised fans with the news during an appearance on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” the following month.
The COVID-19 pandemic made it easier for Mindy to keep her pregnancy private.
Spencer, whose middle name honors Mindy’s father, Avu, sometimes goes by the nickname Spike. However, Mindy has joked that the edgy nickname does not necessarily match his sweet personality.
“He’s so full of joy, and he’s not neurotic,” she told People in 2022.
Mindy said Spencer particularly loved trucks and tires as a toddler. She has also praised his originality and sense of humor.
He celebrated his fifth birthday in 2025 with a “Back to the Future” party featuring a themed cake, an inflatable slide and a DeLorean resembling the movie’s famous time machine.
Anne Kaling
Mindy secretly welcomed her youngest daughter, Anne, in February 2024.
She did not announce the birth until her 45th birthday that June. The actress shared photographs from her pregnancy and the hospital while reflecting on the happiness her children bring her.
“My three kids are such a great reminder of the pure joy in my life,” she wrote on Instagram.
Anne turned 2 in February 2026. While celebrating her first birthday, Mindy described her youngest child as “the baby of the family who made us complete.”
Why Mindy Kaling Protects Their Privacy
Mindy does not show her children’s faces on social media because she wants them to decide whether they want public lives when they are older.
Mindy also keeps their father’s identity private. Her longtime friend and former boyfriend B.J. Novak is their godfather, but Mindy has declined to discuss speculation surrounding her children’s paternity publicly.
