Carson Daly Reacts to Hilarious Throwback Meme He’s Featured In

Before he was helping singers on “The Voice” or popping up during the morning hours on the “Today” show, Carson Daly was the guy running the after-school pop culture scene.

Yep, we’re talking about the glory days of “Total Request Live,” better known to fans as TRL. Back in the late ’90s and early 2000s, Daly helped turn the MTV countdown show into a daily ritual. Teens rushed home from school, flipped on the TV, and waited to see which music videos landed at No. 1. The show debuted in 1998 and quickly became a defining piece of pop culture during that era.

So when a meme started making the rounds online suggesting the ’90s might be making a comeback (complete with a shoutout to Daly), it seems he couldn’t resist joining in on the fun.

And honestly? The nostalgia hit fans right in the feels.

The Carson Daly Meme That Started It All

The meme (seen above) boldly declares that “the 90s are so back.” It then jokes that someone should “call Carson Daly and ask what time TRL is coming on.”

To make the point, the meme also lists a few pop-culture moments that feel straight out of the ’90s but are happening again now. Among them: Hilary Duff going on tour, a new “Scary Movie” on the way, and “Scrubs” popping back up on TV.

It seems like the internet collectively paused and thought… wait a second.

Daly clearly got a kick out of the whole thing. Instead of letting the meme pass him by, he shared it to his own Instagram page and leaned into the joke with a caption that fans instantly loved.

“So many have sent this to me, figured I’d post it because it’s pretty damn funny! Quick note, don’t call me…just hit me on my T-Mobile Sidekick! 😂”

Let’s be real; that Sidekick reference alone instantly transported people back to the early 2000s.

Fans Jump Into the Nostalgia

Once Daly shared the meme, the comment section quickly turned into a mini TRL reunion. Fans jumped in to share their memories, and a lot of them clearly still have a soft spot for those countdown days.

One fan pointed out that while TRL might be long gone, Daly is still a daily part of their routine posting, “I mean, we still show up everyday to watch you on TV like clockwork just at a different hour now 😂”

Another fan shared a very relatable memory about just how seriously they took the show back in the day. They said, “@carsondaly you’re the reason I watch the Today show every morning! But my friends and I were obsessed with TRL and would race home after school so we wouldn’t miss the show, watched it every day! Called every day to get the Backstreet Boys to #1!! Man, I miss TRL days!”

Even some familiar faces chimed in.

Actress Hilarie Burton Morgan (“One Tree Hill”) kept it short and sweet with a comment that quickly got noticed: “Here for it. #trl”

And Daly’s “The Voice” colleague John Legend joined the fun too, simply dropping a laughing emoji: “😂”

Of course, plenty of fans weren’t just reminiscing; they were also pitching ideas.

“Bringing TRL back could literally save us all. 🫶🙌” said one person.

Another added, “Carson Daly should make his own segment of TRL at his morning show for fun😍 why not???!! Bring it back”

And one final fan begged for help, “Do you have a pull to bring back the sidekick?? Please bring it back.”

The TRL Era May Be Over… But Fans Haven’t Forgotten

As fun as it would be to see a full TRL revival, the chances of that happening anytime soon seem pretty slim.

MTV’s programming has shifted a lot over the years, even shutting down their 24-hour music video channels in the UK last year (Rolling Stone). In the USA it seems like instead of music videos dominating the schedule, the network now focuses heavily on reality series like “The Challenge” and “Love & Hip Hop.”

Still, the fact that a simple meme can spark this much excitement says a lot about the impact TRL had on an entire generation of fans.

And judging by the reaction online, plenty of people would happily tune in if Carson Daly ever decided to bring a little piece of that countdown magic back… even if it’s just for fun.
