Robert Irwin Reveals Australia Zoo’s Newest Addition Got a Special Name Courtesy of the Royal Kids

Dancing With the Stars” season 34 champion Robert Irwin is hard at work caring for animals at the Australia Zoo. Now that there’s a new joey at the zoo, Irwin thought the royal children would pick out the perfect name.

In a new Instagram update, Irwin revealed a sweet video of the baby kangaroo and announced the name the princes and princess chose.

Robert Irwin Let the Wales Children Name a Baby Kangaroo

From birth, Robert Irwin was raised to love and protect wildlife. As such, he’s always excited to teach his friends and audience members about animals. He often lets esteemed guests name baby animals, as he recently did with Prince William and Kate Middleton’s children.

“Introducing Cwtch, the newest member of the Australia Zoo family, a gorgeous eastern grey kangaroo joey,” Robert Irwin shared in a new Instagram post. “Cwtch, which means ‘cuddle’ in Welsh, was named by Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. Look out for Cwtch on your next visit to @australiazoo, and support their vital conservation efforts to protect Australia’s wildlife and wild places.”

In the video, the 22-year-old sits cross-legged in the grass as the mother kangaroo stands nearby. Her baby joey peeks out from her pouch.

“G’Day! It’s Robert Irwin here with a couple of my mates,” the reigning DWTS champion shared in the video. “This is, of course, the icon of Australia, the kangaroo, and I’m very proud to announce that my friends, the Wales family, helped us to name our beautiful new joey.”

Prince William’s children opted to name the joey “Cwtch,” pronounced, “Kutch.”

Irwin went on to describe “Cwtch” as the perfect name for the baby kangaroo, citing that joeys always love cuddling.

“I want to say a particular thank you to Prince George, Prince Louis and Princess Charlotte for your help in finding this one a brilliant name,” the conservationist beamed. “It is so important that we conserve all of our animals, including the icons, the kangaroos. These guys play a very important role in the Australian bush and out there in the ecosystem, they are just crucial.”

In the comments, Robert’s mother, Terri, remarked, “So special.💕”

Robert Irwin let the Wales children name this baby kangaroo, but he named another one for one of his peers.

On TikTok, season 31 champion Charli D’Amelio revealed she visited Robert Irwin at the Australia Zoo. He revealed he was naming a baby kangaroo “Charli” in her honor.

“I think it’s only fair that you have a kangaroo named after you. I think that’d be fun. So little Charli, what do you think?” Robert asked, gesturing to the joey.

“This is the best day of my life. Oh my gosh,” Charli gleefully replied. In the TikTok caption, she thanked Robert Irwin for “the best day.”

Robert Irwin hosts “Dancing With the Stars: The Next Pro” premiering on Monday, July 13 on ABC. “Dancing With the Stars” season 35 will follow on the network later in the fall.
