Sandra Bullock Gives Rare Glimpse Into 16-Year Friendship With Jennifer Aniston: ‘One of My Protectors’

Sandra Bullock has spent decades guarding the parts of her life that never belonged to Hollywood, and she credits longtime friend Jennifer Aniston with helping her keep it that way.

Sandra, 62, spoke with Jennifer, 57, for Interview Magazine for an interview published on Tuesday, September 8, while discussing her return to the big screen in “Practical Magic 2.”

Their conversation moved beyond the movie as the longtime friends reflected on privacy, family, and the people Sandra trusts most.

Why Does Sandra Bullock Call Jennifer Aniston Her ‘Protector’?

Jennifer asked Sandra how she separates her public self from the person she keeps for family and friends.

Sandra’s answer made clear that Jennifer is part of that trusted circle. “You know, because you’re one of my protectors,” Sandra said. “I’ve been insanely private since I was a little kid. I drove my mother crazy. That’s just inherently who I am.”

Sandra has rarely shared much about her personal life, even during some of her most difficult years. Her comments offered a glimpse at how important a small group of longtime friends has been behind the scenes.

Sandra has previously revealed that Jennifer was among the people she trusted while her late partner, Bryan Randall, privately battled amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Bryan died in August 2023 at age 57 following a three-year battle with ALS.

During an appearance on the “SmartLess” podcast, Sandra said her sister Gesine Bullock-Prado, Jason Bateman’s wife Amanda Anka, and Aniston were among the few people who knew what the family was going through before Bryan’s death. Sandra has since spoken about the importance of having friends who respected the family’s wish to keep his diagnosis private.

The Interview Magazine conversation was not entirely serious. The friends also joked about getting their hair done before going out together. When Sandra suggested that Jennifer give her a blowout before dinner, the exchange quickly turned into an inside joke.

“I’m going to blow you and then we’re going to go out and have a real great time,” Jennifer joked.

Sandra played along, replying, “That’s right. Blow me and then we go out. Usually it goes the other way around, but this is the way the girls do it. We blow first and then we go out.”

Jennifer later told Sandra, “But really, you’re one of my greatest supporters.”

Sandra responded by telling her, “I love you so much. So grateful for you.”

“Love you,” Jennifer replied.

When Does ‘Practical Magic 2’ Come Out?

Sandra’s return to the spotlight comes as she reunites with Nicole Kidman for the long-awaited sequel to the 1998 film “Practical Magic.”

“Practical Magic 2” also stars Stockard Channing, Dianne Wiest, Lee Pace, Joey King and Maisie Williams.

The sequel arrives in theaters Thursday, September 10.

For Sandra, however, the promotional run has also provided a rare opportunity to show another part of her life: the friendships that have quietly remained steady when the cameras were gone.
