Certain movies continue to provide actors with royalties long after they’ve been made.
That’s particularly true with Christmas movies; while Will Ferrell hasn’t disclosed how much he makes from “Elf” each time the holiday season rolls around, his late co-star James Caan inadvertently revealed (during a 1016 divorce disclosure) that he’d raked in $140,000 the previous year from “Elf” residuals alone.
For Matthew McConaughey, there’s one movie that’s been the gift that keeps on giving.
‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days’
While appearing on the he Happy Sad Confused podcast, the “Dallas Buyers Club” Oscar winner revealed that a fluffy rom-com he made more than two decades ago continues to be his golden goose.
“’How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days ‘is the gift that keeps on giving,” McConaughey said, revealing he still receives hefty royalty checks from the 2003 rom-com, in which he starred opposite Kate Hudson.
“I think it’s probably my favorite rom-com I’ve done,” he added.
Serious ‘Mailbox Money’
Of all his numerous critically acclaimed films, McConaughey marveled that “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” continued to resonate with viewers.
“And a lot of people love that rom-com. It still pays the best ‘mailbox money’ of any film I’ve ever done. By far,” he declared.
While he still earns a tidy sum from that film, there was a point when he’d earned significatly more.
“When [home video] used to be just DVDs or cable [instead of streaming or VOD], every March I’d get a big check because of Valentine’s Day,” he recalled.
And What About That ‘Yellowstone’ Spinoff?
During a recent interview with The Playlist, McConaughey also shared everything he know about the announced “Yellowstone” spinoff that he’d signed on to do with series creator Taylor Sheridan.
While there’s been radio silence about the show since it’s announcement, McConaughey insisted the project wasn’t dead — just in a state of hibernation.
“It’s not any more of a thing than it was or probably any less of a thing than it was that did hit the headlines there for a while,” McConaughey said. “Taylor and I have spoken and have continued to have conversations about what [it could be] and if that would be whatever. But nothing’s real yet.”
Reuniting with Woody Harrelson
While McConaughey is promoting his new movie, “The Rivals of Amziah King,” his next project will reunite him with “True Detective” co-star Woody Harrelson.
That project is “Brothers,” an Apple TV comedy series in which the two play skewed versions of themselves — and confront the rumor that they might actually be real-life brothers.
Per the synopsis, “‘Brothers’ follows McConaughey and Harrelson, who play fictionalized versions of themselves, and whose lifelong friendship is thrown into chaos when they uncover a decades-old secret: they might actually be brothers. After Woody’s daughter’s wedding falls apart, he loads up the family and heads to Austin for an extended stay at Matthew’s ranch. But what begins as a healing getaway quickly spirals when Matthew’s mother, Ma Mac (played by Holland Taylor), accidentally lets slip a long-buried secret that the two friends might actually be brothers. As Woody turns the ranch upside down in pursuit of the truth, Matthew finds himself juggling an entirely different identity crisis: a potential run for Governor of Texas. The result is a heartfelt, chaotic and wildly funny story about friendship, family, fame and the messy line between myth and reality.”
“Brothers” debuts September 23 on Apple TV.
